  1. I found the V3 while learning was fantastic. Although heavy, it took a few knocks where other units would have disintegrated! Once I got to flying without hitting the ground with anything other than feet, I swapped to a Nitro 200.
  2. Very sad, but really makes the point that good training is needed. I think that part of the issue with people watching already trained pilots is that they can make it look easy.
  3. Reported as... He was a spectator. After a couple days of watching, decided he wanted to fly too. Paid attention to people's techniques. Traded a motorcycle for some old gear which appeared to be 15 years old. Got on the radio with someone (not sure if seller or someone else). Someone told him not a good idea but he wanted to fly anyway. Launched and hit the cage and section of netting came off. Another pilot told the instructor "you should tell him to land and inspect his gear. " Was told, he is alright. A couple minutes later pilot is heading downwind towards some power lines. Appeared to panic by pulling brakes to slow down? Then hands went up, wing way overshot and he plummeted face first into the ground from 100 feet. Guys on radio split. I have heard he was 34 but also in his 50's.
  4. I flew in bumpy air this morning on my trusty Roadster 2. With no brake pressure and side on to the wind I estimate swing of at least 15 to 20 degrees each way. Rather weirdly it swings more to the windward side, as though the wind picks up the wing tip on that side first.
  5. It is 114mm x 81.25mm x 35mm and weighs just 475 grams
  6. If it charges in flight then likely not Lipo. 12volt gel cells or 2 x 6volt gel cells are common. Yes, these can be jump started with a car battery, or indeed any 13 to 15 volt supply. Alternatively, get one of these REALLY LIGHTWEIGHT Lithium batteries. They are 40% of the weight and pack a punch. They are expensive at £156....but I have a hardly used one going for half that. http://www.transair.co.uk/sp+Super-B-Lithium-Ion-Batteries-Super-B-2600-Lithium-Karting-Bike-Battery+SUPERB2600
  7. He got 29,500 feet. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/1551636/Explorer-hits-heights-with-Himalayan-record.html
  8. What height did Bear Gryls get over Everest?
  9. I thought they were the same rating, just one is 20% lighter so 4 kg instead of 5 kg.
  10. Just flown this morning with my Garmin wrist alti on. Launched in zero wind - couldn't even tell a wind direction! It was VERY bump and after 15 mins I looked at my wrist to see 72 km/hr (44.7 mph). Trims on neutral, no speed-bar. Turned round to head back and got 19 km/hr backwards! Went trims full out and had to go down very low to make any progress forward. Must pay more attention in future.
  11. The problem with over-revving is that most engines blow up. The piston pops out through the side of the casing as it simply can't take the g forces. At about 8000 rpm the g forces are approaching 5000. It doesn't take much over revving to simply blow it up as either the metal of the con rod or the cylinder casing go past their limit.
  12. Many engines will fail catastrophically if run without the prop on as they have no load preventing them from over revving. They can over rev in the first half second, just from fuel used to prime them.
  13. I just put 2 fingers through the brake handle and the other 2 do the throttle. I also only use 2 fingers on the non-throttle hand as it keeps you feeling the same. When I was learning I also used to cram the brake handle behind the throttle.
  14. That is exactly what I got! Been smiling ever since. :):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)
  15. Russia average salary Rub 40,000/ month = £500 / month. UK average salary £2300 / month.
  16. Wrong Ivan. I worked with top spec Ti welding for 25 years. The UK is more than capable but is too expensive. Even el-cheapo carbon steel fabrication also goes to cheap labour countries now!!! As a result, the Uk manufacturing base has been declining for years and it has been increasing in the countries of cheap labour. Just think about why the UK, who were the world leaders in ship building, now don't build ships.
  17. Wow. I'm 92 kg and machine weighs under 25 kg with fuel and reserve. I never put more than 5 litres in tho!
  18. I just switched to a Nitro so that I can still foot launch - got a bit too knackered to pick up too much weight any more!
  19. Hi, hopefully a helpful comment for you.......when you are getting the risers caught on the frame it is because you are not holding your arms out to the side. Because it is hard to hold your arms out and take the pull it is natural to bend them. You have your arms bent and out in front of you.

    fuel

The fuel containers are HDPE (high density polyethylene). This plastic does not really degrade with time - most car fuel tanks are now made from this. White plastic only stays white in sunlight because it contains a UV protection additive. This additive is affected by the fuel. The main issues with petrol storage are water ingress and the loss of the most volatile components of the fuel. In plastic containers water can find its way in very slowly over time. By a similar mechanism the smallest molecules (the most volatile - vapourise at the lowest temp) can find their way out. Both of these make the fuel worse and can cause initial starting issues in 2-strokes. Plastic is fine for a month or so. Because I alternate between Spain and UK every 2 months, when I travel I leave the fuel behind - because it stinks my car out! This means it gets stored in plastic containers for about 10 weeks. I have had no problems with this. As Andre does, I also remove unused fuel from my machine if I am not going to use it for a few weeks. I use this fuel siphon tube https://www.screwfix.com/p/laser-jiggle-siphon-hose-20mm-x-1-75m/23447 although the one Andre linked to looks like it might make emptying the tank easier.
  21. And to think that the UK was a world leader in specialist welding!!!! Much of chemical industry (have we still got any left) uses Ti. Just think where those Nuclear subs get their condenser heat exchangers from! These are what in part determine maximum depth as they open to sea pressure......but I had to sign this official secrets thing before working on them!!!!! There are still dozens of UK coded specialist welding companies. I think Russia is cheap labour!
  22. I looked hard at the Maverick before getting Nitro. The Nitro is lighter and as Greg says above has pretty much no reported problems. Support from Vince is excellent.
  23. Hi, I switched from airbox to using Runway HD on my phone....Samsung Note 4, which is large so us older people can see it. I still have my airbox and don't use it!
  24. Romania. 35 year old having engine prob. Started on ground, on full throttle. Spun round and chopped head. http://www.opiniatimisoarei.ro/teribil-accident-in-timis-un-tanar-a-fost-lovit-mortal-de-elicea-unei-parapante-cu-motor/07/01/2018
