I am keen to fly across having read recent accounts but wonder why people choose not to cross at the narrowest point, ie from south of Lymington. I stayed at a campsite there last summer and the girl in the office said it would be ok to launch from there. Hurst View site is only about a mile from the spit of land to the south and airspace is 2000 ft above the campsite rising to 3500 ft at the narrowest gap - about a mile across. Nige

Get a v5, I love mine. I weigh 80 kilos and get a climb around 350 ft minute. Our personal weight differences isn't that much more than the weight of a full fuel load so I think it would be adequately powerful enough. If I fly mine slow I could stay up for 6 hours! My wing is a 31 Nucleon but a 29 would be better if I wanted to hill fly. Nige

Castrol TTS, ie fully synthetic racing 2 stroke oil, 33-1 - just put 150mils into a 5 litre can. I bought a Rad mxl new 9 years ago and kept it for 7. Make sure there is a safety wire around the exhaust in-case/for-when it falls off. Mine and a few others had a weakness on the mounting brackets. The conical screw on the carb is for tickover the other is the low mixture screw. Bring it to Cheshire and would be happy to tell you all about them. Nige

Its easy to set up a debit card account with Radne, I still have one from when I had a Rad. I cant remember the postage being that bad, but certainly worth it to not have to drive x amount of miles to fetch bits, and they have most bits and are prompt. I look at Rads website from time to time and wonder whats happening given that nothing seems to change. I wonder how many machines have been sold this last couple of years. Nige

Only try it if you can borrow such a prop and have a rev counter to check it. To give you some idea try adjusting the pitch slighly on your tri-blade and see how much it affects rpm, but more importantly how critical it is trying to get it back! Nige

4.6 recurring to 1, hmm... What you want then is the results of someone elses previous experimentation with different props. In order for the prop to get optimum power from the engine, ie reving to about 9500, the pitch and other dimensions need to be just right so unless you have access to several different props you need to know which one works. best of luck with your research. Measure the pulley diameters and divide the larger by the smaller, it might be 3.5/1 or whatever. If the prop you had in mind was the 2 bladed one used on the rad arrow then you would need to know the ratio for the reduction used on that machine and hope it is the same. Hope that helps. Nige

Cant help much but check the reduction ratio is suitable for whatever prop you fit. I think the rad arrows which you might be thinking of copying have a reduction system made by Radne in Sweden and are bound to be different to the reduction you currently have which originated in Oxford. You could always flog it and buy my Pap 1400 top80 instead! (£1900) Nige ps welcome to the group.

For those that find reaching the starter handle a little difficult I have found a technique. What I have found is that you reach behind your head and rest a couple of fingers on your helmet then move your head around to help the other fingers find the handle. Sounds a bit daft but it pushes your hand a little further than you can comfortably reach. Nige

I had a couple of those spring ball things with my speedbar and couldn't figure what they were for! I have been using the Velcro flap at the front of my harness to hold the bar. You may indeed find that fuel calculations based on the gauge might be slightly inaccurate.. Try a measured amount into a drained tank, fly for an hour then empty remains in a measuring jug, or weigh it. You might find it concurs with the gauge - it might be a little different, certainly handy to know for future reference when you might be cutting it fine on a long xc. Should be ok re pics thanks, I used neo magnets to hold the bar on my last machine which worked well, maybe do the same again. Cheers Nige

Hi Morgy, how are you getting on with your V5 and in particular the fuel consumption? Best so far is 2.3 litres consumed for an hours flight on a cold day (if that makes any difference?). I have just over 4 hours on mine I wonder how others are doing. Nige

It does climb on full speed bar and trim but I didnt keep it on long enough to see how fast it climbed as it hasnt been run-in enough yet. So far I have just over 4 hours on the V5, I wonder how others are getting on. The temperatures before, during and after my efficiency test flight didnt vary more than a few degrees so I imagine the weighing fuel method would have probably returned similar results but certainly something to consider for future tests.
