  1. I'm sure moving the tank is possible, but for what gain? Are you going to be changing the cage to a 2 part? If effort => gain, then i'd leave it alone. You will also need to think about how you are going to change/check spark plugs on the inverted engine. If it ain't broke......
  2. Funny? A complete idiot nearly kills himself.... and potentially puts the sport into jeopardy? Not so... A very good argument for licencing and regulation.

  5. Or Simon.... what about a compromise on all 3 arguements here and say- electric fuel cell...... No doubt electricity will be the winner in the end, but the technology in energy storage is not quite 100% yet. Sure there are some pretty impressive batteries available now, but they can get better and cheaper.....

Although remember- 2 strokes have fewer moving parts, and are twice as powerful for a given weight- compared to four strokes. pros and cons for each way now, but the future will be direct injection 2 stroke machines- similar weight to current 2 strokes, same power and weight, with the economy of a 4 stroke..... bring it on!!!!   7. You'll need to send it to somewhere like 'The Loft' for a thourough independent inspection- line lengths, porosity, etc.... You should be doing regular self inspections every 10-20 hours, especially on the lines. Line breakages can be quite serious, and difficult to spot. GD
  8. Here's the cleaning procedure for the carb- Use your flightlog to schedule this procedure at least every 15hours, and you'll never be caught out again. It's also a good opportunity to give the rest of the carb/intake system a good inspection. This does not just apply to H&E machines- most equipment with a Walbro will have the same characteristics. It may seem a little inconvenient, but debris being trapped in this filter is better than stuff entering the internal areas of the carb.   9. I've had this before- and recognise the symptoms..... it's an easy cure. Just remove the back plate off the carb and clean the internal filter behind the membrane- you should do this every 15hrs or so, even if you are using fuel filters and a a 'Mr.Funnel' fuel separator. You'll be surprised what comes out of the filter. I've got a procedure document- (illustrated) Please let me know if you want it. gd
  10. Definitely don't fly above or below a HAB, their acent and decent rates are very fast!. Can actually climb up to 700fpm!- much faster than a paramotor. In normal level flight with a balloon, generallly don't get too close 500ft would be close enough. I cant understand how HAB's can generate wake? They're moving with the wind, they have no sensation of wind in the balloon, therefore how could a wake be generated? GD

  12. The guy in the video cuts the engine very late for landing. Usuallly i'd cut a lot sooner, maybe 50ft or so from the ground- but only after i've cleared the last obstruction, and i'm totally comitted to landing. GD
  13. Dan, was around 700ft for this shot, using the zoom lens i think. I've only 3X optical on my Fuji Z1 so i stayed quite low.

  15. 5,400ft for me..... or 1 mile. It's pretty amazing actually- I'm located pretty centrally in Northern Ireland and from that height you can see pretty much all of the top end of the country on a clear day.   16. I'm using an H&E R80, Icom A6 and Micro Avionics headset- the engine has been fitted with an 'R' type plug, but i'm still getting interference which makes the radio jam in RX mode... tried the ANR function, and high squelch settings, but to no avail? Any suggestions please? GD
  17. Now that's a real clever idea- Using the cage to mount the aerial. I've only used the standard aerials before, on a chest pocket on the flying suit- and almost poked my eye out several times...

  19. How often should membranes be replaced typically? I used to do this every year, but this year i've been doing a lot more flying- put 70 hours on an H&E R120 since April, so i guess it may be in need of a change....... GD
  20. Currently i'd only 'assist' with wingwork- on the understanding that the pupil has to get training from a professional. Being familiar with the wing before going on a training course is a great benefit. GD

  23. Not that i'd recommend it either... but if I had to, id choose a very big level field, and fly on a cloudless night with a full moon. A back up team on the ground would be essential with illumination for the landing point, but if emergency struck- engine out, etc.. the chances of a safe landing would be slim. GD
