  1. Reckon also that she don't seem to have done up her leg straps. Need a volunteer to check 'em. Please form an orderly queue. Behind me....
  2. I cannot help but think that there is a clear parallel here between the question of PRC wing knock-offs and the counterfeit pharamaceuticals racket. In both cases the people who spend the money investing in research and design - and testing - get the shaft as others enjoy the benefits of the costing model in which pre-production costs are zilch. Like the pharmaceuticals also, whereas most of the knockoffs would probably just about do the business some of them will seriously harm your health or your life. I would be most unhappy if any of my clients were to seek to exploit my products at the cost only of the redistribution medium without being straight regarding the slice of my R&D costs and the value of my intellectual property copyright.
  3. 'running' and 'vista' - now there's two words not seen together often...... Another solution, rather than that tree-hugging hippy apple route, is simply to insert disk 1 of the Linux of your choice installation set into the drive and run setup........
  4. Personal Mobile Radio - licence-free short range radios of the type costing a tenner a pair or so at a supermarket! Typically couple of km range, 8 channels and a bunch of sub channels, usually seems to be channel 7 subchannel 17 in PPG. OK for localised air to air when chugging along in company, and ground to air including in the training environment, carrying traffic such as "Other way, Dick - land into wind. Need to land into the wind, Dick. Into wind, Dick. Dick, INTO WIND. Dick, INTO THE BL.... You OK, mate?" more info http://www.transmission1.co.uk/modules. ... icle&sid=6
  5. Approval obtained for landing and takeoff plus overnight camping (all fees waived by landowner as charity event) close by Clapham (between Settle and Ingleton) in the dales (earlier hoped for Goat Gap campsite is no longer operating). The owner understands the somewhat fluid nature of the timescale through the weather dependent nature of the thing and is fairly relaxed about that aspect. Contact made with Parish council and article submitted for next issue of their parish newsletter (which for a "blink and you missed it" village of this size is very impressive - http://www.claphamyorkshire.co.uk/newsletter.html) Actual field selection depending on wind direction on the day. Detailed site survey to follow in next week or two. Fields concerned are on the east side of Clapham village, near the A65. Outdoor leisure OL2, standard UK OS coords (03)747(04)692 to rough location. 54 degrees 07'04" North 2 degrees 23'14" West rough lat/long. The camp field contains water tap etc and (immaculately clean) lavatories adjacent at edge of NT carpark. Vehicle access to fields OKayed by owner. Village contains pub plus bunkhouse with licensed cellar cafe/bar, couple of other cafes and the village store. Will sound out the bunkhouse for potential scrounge of use of additional facilities, showers etc. As Goat Gap no longer operates, their helo landing spot is not available but the air ambulance now lands on a field in the village (occasional need for cavers etc - Gaping Ghyll is just up the Ingleborough track). Intending to drop a few copies of the submitted parish mag article in leaflet form (with pointer to the charity donation URL) into the cafes in the village, and Ingleton, Settle etc when next there (on the basis that if it prompts nothing then nowt is lost or cost, but anything that does result is a bonus) to appeal to the self-interest of cavers, canyoners and assorted outdoor cragrats who are the potential beneficiaries of the air ambulance services! Incidentally and apropos of not much at all, by my eyeball and finger-divider assessment, the area looks to be broadly the half way point for the T2T?
  6. The leccy issue of endurance is almost certainly going to be solved in the fairly near future, the one that will need a bit of a rethink is the second flight matter - refuelling. Safe recharge is currently considerably slower than heaving in a few gallons of jollop and does require some creative solutions to get connections to electricity either from a main supply, portable genny or some flavour of yoghurt-knitter approved renewable. Five years, ten years, yes the solar cell fabric, its the early years that perhaps need covering, plus the days flying under a reasonably high wall to wall overhead clag. Initially I suspect that the solution will consist of having several easily swappable battery packs, with the expense that entails. But..... perhaps the solution is not to store the leccy, simply to generate it as required with a fuel cell. At least allows for refuel with fairly portable hydrogen pressure tank in the back of the van, even if currently limited refuel options if landing out. And.... would one fit in the boot of the new Tesla I wonder (http://www.teslamotors.com/)
  7. "Om mani padme hum. om mani padme hum..." etc etc etc No? Oh, just me then.
  8. I suspect the police's starting point would be along the lines of "Oho! Whats a-going on here, then! You seem to have agreed to purchase an item when you have no intention of doing so, thus attempting to commit fraud against some upright and law-abiding Nigerian businessman and most likely infringing his yuman rites to boot. Would you by any chance be any two or more of: white, middle aged, middle class, Christian, straight, male - that proves it! You're nicked, chummy....." Cynical, moi? Mind how you go.....
  9. one of the training sites used by Paul Haxby of AXB Sports (http://www.AXBsports.com) is north of Fishlake (in the vee where the M18 meets the M62) and not much more than a dozen miles from Selby. His paramotor school is well respected, and in common with most established training organisations school kit is available to train on and be sure the sport is actually for you before making what is after all a far from trivial financial investment!
  10. well, this pie-devouring and lard sandwich afficionado16 stone 8 in the nip (whatever that is in new money) enjoys a Gin Bolero Plus size XL (with subsequent power risers). DHV1, very forgiving and easy to manage, very, very stable, and the weight range if fine for your weight (speissed on to give I suppose 148 kg all up or thereabout?) Not the sexy reflexes I know but hey, it does the business just fine (and is pretty good for hill PG for an occasional tree hugger)
  11. I thought that the mode S and enhanced S transponders are intended to transmit their squawks for monitoring by ATC systems - I am presumably missing something if this is not in fact the case. Or is it that businessman Joe pootling along in his Cessna will have kit that detects the squawk? Presumably yes for 'Ace' Rimmer with a Tornado strapped to his back? Ditto for PC Prune in the force's helo? Can someone please clarify this for bears of small brain such as me, so although I will be none the wiser, I may at least be better informed...
  12. of course, Chuck Norris would do it without a parachute ........
  13. I have also obtained a lightman setup and concur that it is really not a complete answer in itself. However I intend also to give it a go next time out and see what happens. I also obtained a MPI little strobe - one torch battery and about hte same sort of brightness as the lightman (but a few bob cheaper) in a small dome. Both of them are fairly insignificant in terms of extra weight. The intention is to try them with the lightman facing forward fitted (vertically) to the front of the lap reserve container, and the dome one strapped into the cage top joint securing arrangements and directed astern. The logic for trying it this way is that as has already been identified, we are especially hard to spot from dead ahead and astern (no target speed across hence zero bearing rate ie steady bearing). Granted that even at a 90 degree track the angular velocity we input is pretty small, but it does seem most risky in the head and stern arcs so it seems most sensible to look at those as the first resort. Yeah, not a full answer, but as has already been said, anything we can do, however small, to increase our chances of being seen....
  14. "...until he doth repent. I then shall learn him long to full respect his King And bear not arms against his father's blood..." etc etc According to some old chap, name escapes me, presumably Warwickshire branch of the club, somewhere Stratford way I think..! Granted the usage is now considered a bit archaic. (Just cos it is mostly archaic usage, no reason to get heated about it. After all, we can't have archaic and heat it.) RG (mind of a ninja, body of a manatee)
  15. advantages of flying boots: 1. Generally lighter 2. All-eyelet ie no hooks for lines to get caught on 3. Usually higher neck so more ankle support (some walking boots have equally good support but some dont) 4. Pose factor advantages of walking boots: 1. Generally cheaper 2. Vastly larger number of sources 3. Much wider range of 'fit' within sizes (especially for the 'big boy' sizes this is significant!) Personally - walking boots due to parsimony and size 13/14 depending on make. Free flying used to slap a line of masking tape over the eyelets but gradually couldn't be bothered and it has not presented a problem so far.
  16. Available from boundtree in Telford (without the 'authorised personnel only' constraint that the copshop site applies) is the version with 4 different lenses (clear/amber/green/red) at £22.95 + VAT and delivery. Got one coming to look at. link here

Hey, why so non-committal - say what you really think about it!

    A call from FCT.

which is of course why we should do our best to support organisations like the Forces Children's Trust who work to provide through charitable donations and volunteeer efforts the succour to the children of Armed Forces families that should be theres by right in any truly civilised society.

all of them have, including Haslar, just one of the many examples of betrayal of the services by the integrity-challenged pygmies we allow to rule us, and the same lack of honesty that sees Gurhas shafted and enemies smarmed upon. Would it be cynical of me to suspect that: a. No significant action took place against any members of the spitting family, and b. If it had been the other way round and the serviceman casualty's visitor had spat at the middle eastern patient it would have been a case of instant "mind yer fingers, you're nicked" >SLAM< For some reason, the political class seem puzzled by the contempt in which they are almost universally held.
  20. And the RN (technically successful) attempts at HTP propulsion systems resulted in the class concerned being unofficially renamed from the 'Explorer' to the 'Exploder' - with some reason! However, can certainly see the attractions of bringing together the current 'best of breed' elements (per the head of this thread) and developing them further - the synergies achieved when the current components were assembled may be different as a cumulative result of the individually possibly modest changes that have come about in those components. May still face a fair bit of further evolution before the next revolution point is reached. Just an aside thought but I wonder if the announcement of rotary engine paramotor series production to start spring 2009 might/will have an impact on second half sales of 'traditional' units in 2008?
  21. It appears that among the major beneficiaries of mode S imposition will be the unmanned aviation businesses, on whom the main burden of cost will not fall. After all, an unmanned flying object does not meet the usual requirements of keeping a proper lookout for anti collision purposes, so this can be managed and simplified instead by making everything in the air keep announcing their positions. Using the same logic we can perhaps now look forward to issuing full car driving licenses to blind persons, whose need to avoid other vehicles will be overcome through insisting that all vehicles are rewired so that their horns are permanently sounding. At least the CAA were partly shamed into following some of the rules governing consultations of this nature instead of their original arrangements that ignored most of the rules. Cynics would think the fix is in, folks, and that the mode S issue is simply part of a continuing attack on the freedom of this sport along with related airsports which will all very soon be shifted from 'allowed unless explicitly banned' to 'banned unless explicitly authorised at a price' by our noble and not in the slightest greasy politicians, but cynics would be cynical, wouldn't they. Update from BGA/BHPA who of course are also seriously concerned: The recent mode S meeting with CAA at Turweston was attended by 35 air sport pilots. Although the questions from the floor made some impact, the low attendance will not have gone unnoticed by CAA. It is very clear that feedback to CAA on the current mode S proposals is extremely important – even the DAP team agree with that point. With this in mind, please can I ask you to circulate the following text to your members? The meetings described below are open to all, and those from air sport who attended a meeting at Lasham in 2006 will recall the significant and effective impact that can be made with the regulator when people are willing to stand up and be counted. Mode S Meetings - 2008 BGA clubs are hosting a number of open meetings with the CAA to hear about the current Mode S consultation process. ALL ARE WELCOME. The meetings (all 7pm) will be at: Lasham Friday 4th April Pocklington (Wolds GC) Friday 11th April Directions to all clubs is available on the BGA web site at www.gliding.co.uk/findaclub/clubdirectory.htm. These meetings are a great opportunity for members to engage with the rulemakers and further clarify our airspace needs. We will shortly be providing guidance on how to respond to the consultation, but these meetings will help you to develop your own personal view on how to respond. We are calling on all glider pilots to make a response as was done to such great effect during the first round of consultation and, as such, the BGA urges ALL pilots to try to attend one of the meetings. More information on the consultation process is on the BGA web site at http://www.gliding.co.uk/bgainfo/airspace/modes2008.htm
