AndyB
Reported as... He was a spectator. After a couple days of watching, decided he wanted to fly too. Paid attention to people's techniques. Traded a motorcycle for some old gear which appeared to be 15 years old. Got on the radio with someone (not sure if seller or someone else). Someone told him not a good idea but he wanted to fly anyway. Launched and hit the cage and section of netting came off. Another pilot told the instructor "you should tell him to land and inspect his gear. " Was told, he is alright. A couple minutes later pilot is heading downwind towards some power lines. Appeared to panic by pulling brakes to slow down? Then hands went up, wing way overshot and he plummeted face first into the ground from 100 feet. Guys on radio split. I have heard he was 34 but also in his 50's.
alan_k
Tragic and idiotic at the same time. Makes you wonder if he had done any/enough ground handling first. 1
AndyB
Very sad, but really makes the point that good training is needed. I think that part of the issue with people watching already trained pilots is that they can make it look easy.
alan_k
Absolutely Andy, once you have mastered it it can appear very easy. 1
