irm750
What's that? A GPS for the visually impaired? Even my dad would be able to see the buttons on that! Hope you've got plenty of spare thrust? You'll need it to get that in the air - It looks huge!! Best regards, Ian.

Guest
You know me and toys mate.... I am not a toy person, I needed a GPS, I looked (for about 2 mins) and decided that I liked the (SMALLNESS) of this unit. and the screen that you can see in direct bright sunlight. I then found one new for £200 so go it I could read the marketing crap but of course that will be a gleaming report, hence the question. If I dont like it I will sell it after Tip to Tip SW
irm750
Oh, do you mean the photo wasn't to scale? Nice bit of kit. I looked at it when I was buying my GPS but budget didn't go that far so bought an eTrex Vista C which I love to bits. What maps is it coming with? I found some great free ones and upload software if you would like the websites? Best regards, Ian.

Farmer_Dave
Glad you bought one Simon. That's another user that I can glean information from. I hope to learn how to use mine before it expires. Just been given a long list of farms by a lorry driver mate with grid references. he reckons better than half of them would be ok with the odd landing. Whole of the SW. irm750
My eTrex Vista c came through ebay without any software or decent maps, and looking at the Topo maps on the Garmin site they didn't appeal to me. I searched and raked over loads of sites and maps. The outcomes are distilled below. Free maps, viewer and map upload software available as follows - Map viewer (GPSMapEdit) - http://geopainting.com/en Garmin air maps (GARMINAIRUK.zip/GARMINAIRUKT.zip) - http://ukgarminairmap.wikispaces.com/latestfiles Map files (some completely useless, but some absolute gems that I use) - http://garminmapsearch.com/ I use sendmap20 to send maps to the GPS. Available from - http://www.cgpsmapper.com/buy.htm#standard I couldn't find a way to get the official Mapsource software to upload/download waypoints etc for free, even though this website shows how to. Maybe you might have more luck? http://freegeographytools.com/2007/garmin-mapsource-for-free My GPS came with a data lead, but if you don't have one it is a generic USB lead as used for Tom Tom or other devices. I hope this is useful to someone? If anyone has any other info, it would be gratefully received!!! Best regards, Ian.

waynevan2000
Hi irm750 I managed to get mapsource working properly with my GPSmap 60CSx. I have installed City Navigator Europe NT 2008 which i transfered to the gps. maps, waypoints, routes etc all working fine.As well as topo and transparent air maps. What maps were you trying to use with mapsource ? Not sure if the forum rules allow for me to attach the file needed. cough....Jetmouse You may also find this interesting for adding the Garmin Air Maps through mapsource. http://freegeographytools.com/2007/addi ... -mapsource Wayne
irm750
My Norton antivirus, also latest version didn't pick up anything. Is this a dodgy application Pete? Thanks for the other tips Wayne. I couldn't get mapsource working properly on my PC, but then I was trying to download it for free as I didn't like any of the official Garmin maps for flying so didn't want to buy a map just to get mapsource. Thanks also for the steer towards Mr J Mouse!! Best regards, Ian.
togsie
Guys, if your worried that a file may contain a virus you may find this website useful: http://virscan.org/ You can submit a file and it will run it through just about every virus scanner known to man and give you a report. If it's just one scanner that's reporting a virus then it's probably a false positive. Regards Togsie

togsie
Hi All, How do you Sat Nav users carry your devices in flight. I guess that a flight deck is the obvious solution but I don't think that I'm ready for the extra clutter just yet. I was thinking of trying to strap mine to my leg, my reasoning is that it would be out of harms way during take off any easily to hand and usable once seated. I was thinking of getting hold of some Velcro and trying to knock something up. Thoughts anyone? Regards. Togsie.

irm750
I stow the GPS safely away for takeoff/landing in my thigh pocket. I stuck male velcro on the back of the GPS and a patch of female velcro on the knee of the suit next to the thigh pocket (heavy duty sticky backed velcro from woolworths) . The lanyard is attached through a slit which I cut in the top of the pocket under the flap so that it cannot escape! Best regards, Ian.
