fuzzybabybunny
I've always been under the impression that having a clutch is a safety feature and at the very least can prevent lines from getting chopped up when you screw up something. But I also like the idea of the ultralight Air Conception Nitro 200 and as far as I know there's no clutch for it (they say it's coming but it never comes), so at this point I'm actually considering just getting one without a clutch. I'm a newbie though with only about 20 hours of PPG and 20 hours of freeflight. So what are some pros and cons of not having a clutch? Is it really something that you can do without and *never* have any real incidents?
Hodders
This web page seems to sum up the key differences. http://www.scoutparamotor.com/the-complete-guide-how-choose-a-paramotor/do-you-need-a-clutch/

Guest chrisg547
Nice one. Just in time for the next years season. An XL with e-start and clutch could well be my new toy !!!
custom-vince
im thinking the same. I like the XL concept. Waiting for titanium version. Clutch with e.start, well why not. looking at the details, im expecting big changes with the way its been setup, keep hearing about how much quieter it is. 73kg thrust before at 7800rpm 125cm prop. The XL is offering 80kg thrust at 6100rpm 150cm prop!!! Looking at the eco tests im hoping it will do well here, fingers crossed. 3000 rpm = under 2 l/h XL 3500 rpm = (typical level flight 150cm) 4000 rpm = 2,25 l/h 5000 rpm = 2,66 l/h (typical level flight 125cm) 5500 rpm = 3,27 l/h 6000 rpm = 4,80 l/h XL 6100 rpm = (max thrust 80kg 150cm) 7000 rpm = 6,74 l/h 7900 rpm = 8,57 l/h (max thrust 73kg 125cm, 75kg 130cm)
ptwizz
Returning to the original question: Is the clutch a positive safety feature? Benefits: If your engine is idling and you put your hand, lines, genitals etc. into the cage, you won't get hurt, poorer or embarrassed in front of your mates. Possibly easier starting. Costs: More weight, another possible source of failure, possible small increase in drag with engine off, prop continues to spin when engine shut down. cas_whitmore
Personally I like the clutched motor seems to soften the throttle somewhat, and doesn't kick back and forth on idle or when I'm just floating about just above idle speed . Not really problem just little annoying after a while. cas.

Thats 4 stroke territory.
custom-vince
Those are the figures which have been obtained in testing, a couple of pilots have the XL and testing. Its good news so far, they are very impressed. Only testing myself will I be 100%. I am waiting on the titanium NXL for myself. With such a big prop, I am thinking of the clutch version. There in could be a problem. The 150 prop can work at such low rpm, what if my level flight is below the rpm needed to engage the clutch. I will have to go for direct drive. Will know all this soon enough.
custom-vince
It's here... Nitro Electric Start with Clutch Not much to see or show really. 20.8kg for this HD titanium version.
custom-vince
A photo has been taken of the Nitro Electric Start Clutch on the scales 12.7kg, they done an amazing job keeping the weight down. The complete paramotor is 20.8kg. I found a pic of the Thor 190 light the only other light weight engine with electric electric start and a clutch that I can think of which has similar performance, 18kg, considering the original thor190 pull start is not that heavy being similar to moster classic in weight.
