  1. My Roadster 2 is very forgiving and I can't tell any difference between trimmers in or out at landing with regards to flare. Both scenarios have easily enough flare ability to stop on a spot.

    Trimmers in has a slower rate of descent and a slower forward speed. Trimmers out has higher speed, because of its higher rate of descent!

    Hence, the wings ability to flare is the same in either case.  The difference between the 2 is the speed at which you pull the brakes to flare. Trimmers in (slow) requires the flare from hands up to full brake much quicker than with trimmers out. With trimmers out the flare takes longer as you have more speed to scrub off and pull the brakes more slowly, aiming to keep your feet just above the ground until you have slowed down.

    If you have a clutched machine, engine on and at idle makes no difference.

    Using power while landing is something to be done with great care. If you power off before you actually touch down then you swing back and accelerate towards the ground! Hence you need to power off high enough up that the swing back, then swing forward can stabilise before you reach the ground.

     

     

  2. I have some very large RC planes :) one with an 18 kw motor (24hp)

    There are some downsides as well! Most RC engines are started by flicking the prop, although it is possible to add on a small electric starter.

    They are more noisy as they use smaller props at higher rpm.....but the radials don't half sound good!

    I am considering a rather radical approach, which is to use 2 RC engines, each with a 24"/26" prop. These would be counter-rotating so no torque steer. Off-setting the engines front to back allows over-lap of the props in the middle where they are less efficient anyway, behind the pilot. The cage design becomes much smaller and the props would have massive ground clearance!

    I don't trust any reflex wing which has a manual that tells you not to trust the reflex profile and to actively fly it if the conditions get slightly iffy. Or any wing manufacturer which moves the A lines back too far from the leading edge (IMHO). Or that uses shark nose. But that's just me.

One other thing I notice on cruise or level flight  I can vary my speed by 1 mph depending where I sit in the harness and I wonder if this is due to angle of propeller?

     

    Yes, I used to have my Parajet on hole 5 (hang point) from hang test, but then I lost 10 kg. On hole 5 I always found landings awkward because I was leaning backwards and it felt difficult to get my feet down! Having lost weight I moved in a hole to number 4. I am really in between 'holes'. 

    Anyway, the more to the rear hang-point gives me a more upright position and this increased speed noticeably. So you are probably correct regarding prop angle.
