First time at Barry's for me too since I trained with Steve Haze 6 years ago - lovely evening with about 4 balloons up and one to play around with on my new BaileyV5s Zenith. Had to keep a beady on the virga in the distance over London ;)

Nice to see Steve again and two others whose names I've now forgotten in the focus of setting up...

    Jon and Greg           :-)

    Your Bailey sounded very meaty!

Hi Greg , Barrys is take off and go somewhere ' no circuits as such there are a few houses around the field. 10 quid a day ' phone him first don't just turn up ' not sure about 28 day rule ' 800ft ceiling till your over the A31hogs back much higher and you will be eye level with air craft in to farnbourgh ' that's about it ' I've had some fantastic evening flights from there .

    cas.

I forgot to ask about the 800ft comment... Can you provide more details? I fly around the area sometimes but wasn't aware of an issue with Farnborough traffic...

  3. Hi all.

I've never been to Barry's field - what is the procedure? Are there limits on pilot numbers? What about total flight volume - is the 28-day rule an issue? Can it be used for circuits or is it strictly a "take off and then go away" field?

Is there any interest in finding another field in Guildford that could be flown from? I was talking to Merrist Wood earlier to see if they have anything suitable and there are a couple of potential fields there but I suspect they're a lot smaller than barry's field...

  4. :-)

My biggest issues with turbulence are:

    - I have no idea how bad it can get nor how quickly.

    - I know I can't "switch to manual" and fly actively if it gets beyond a certain point (and I don't know where that point is or what it looks like). So far - even when it's felt really scary - I've watched the wing and never seen any hint of tips collapsing or anything. It always looks solid on reflex.

    - I never know whether to dive to get away from it or climb through it. Climbing feels like I'm heading deeper into danger (although today I forced myself to climb through it with gritted teeth and it was better higher up)

I guess every time I experience it I'll learn a bit.

I took off at 8.00 pm and it was still as rough as hell. At 8.45 I was at 1500 feet over my LZ and going backwards with trims in!

    Lol.

So it's not just me then....

I'll try again tonight but I'm not hopeful. Thing is a more experienced pilot would probably climb through it but I'm not confident enough to do that, and landing immediately if I'm not happy is the safest option.

The launch and landing still count though ;-)

  6. I've found the air really rough the last couple of days (Surrey/Hants border) despite the superb looking forecasts and the lack of cloud. So bumpy that I landed again immediately.

Really gutted because the forecast looked so good.

In fact I'm starting to wonder if there's something wrong or broken with my gear that's making it so unstable. Which is not a great place to be!

The master plan ' sickening '

wouldn't want to be any near there after work ' fact that the surrounding roads can't take that amount of traffic '

Yeah it seems daft. The A281 is too busy at the best of times.

  8. From a FB post:

"Hi, posted on another forum about Brize Norton.

    Luke Nicol:
Forwarded from another forum. "Rafbrizenortonconsultation@ospreycsl.co.uk  this is the only place you can object to the proposed airspace extensions.
The 2 petitions being publicised will achieve nothing! Even if they get 5000 signatures if they accept it. It will only count for 1 objection. Exactly the same for group submissions from clubs and organisations. And our governing body. Individual responses to the e mail above are the only accepted way of objecting.  Please share this with paraglider and club groups. We need to ALL object to help keep crosscountry routes free."

Apparently us all filling out the change . org petition is not the correct way to object. We need to make sure we aren't all wasting our effort on something that won't be seem!"
