  1. Hi Ben

I guess your 'Ed?' is aimed at me.

Phil is correct when he states that a Skydiving canopy is built completely different to a Paragliding wing (especially the Reflex type)

It has a slider to slow opening, more lines (and stronger) and a pilot chute to pull the parachute from the rig. It is a device that is much more radical, and more fun than a parawing but it is designed solely to stop you from hitting the ground too hard!

When I was skydiving it was all about the freefall and the parachute was opened as low as possible (and safely) so we could spiral down and get on the next lift quickly.

The 2 sports are very different and I am not sure why you would want a paragliding wing that could be deployed from freefall, I don't feel the need to mix the sports as, for me, they are totally different.

    Hope that helps.

Are you coming over from the dark side yet?

  2. After I have seen the mighty Chelsea beat Arsenal on Saturday I will be down on Sunday.

It would be great to see you Pete and use your help and guidance.

Frazer, if you come down you are welcome to have a fly with my motor (on a bendit/mendit basis, of course)

Anybody else for Sunday to make Petes trip worthwhile?

  3. Thought Ken might have some more info on what happened but it seems that no one is sure!

We were out on the last night in France having a meal and Togsie got up and said he needed some fresh air and was'nt feeling well (it was very early in the meal and he had'nt been drinking).

As he reached the door he passed out/fainted (not sure exactly) but as he fell he hit his head on the very hard tiled floor which was why the precaution was taken to get an ambulance.

Whitters sorted out Ken and Simon (along with their steaks) and after some checks at the hospital Ken was released okay. I am sure if I have missed anything he will jump in and straighten me up!

It is great to hear that he is okay and I look forward to doing some flying with him at Lambourn very soon

    Cheers

  4. I had expected to keep the theme of Famous five/Star wars and Biggles running in France but it never worked out.

Might be because when we were'nt in the field, listening to lectures/briefs we were 'socialising'!.

It was a great week for me and the rest of the 'Fodder five' with lot's getting done.

When I went I had a couple of 'edgy, flights to my name and not a lot else. I came back with a fair knowledge of Air Law, Flight aerodynamics, Paramotor checking and maintenance and, my favorite, Air Navigation, as well as my first cross country!.

I have to say that it must be nerve racking to be out of site of the launch site for the first time at Lambourn but it is more so at a strange site in another country!.

My thanks to SW for sorting that out and having confidence in my ability. It is unfortunate that with another half day of good weather I may have got PPG1 and another 2 of the fodder may have got into the air.

I can only recommend that anyone wishing to take up this sport (is it a sport or a pastime?) get on a course and take advantage of the incredible amount of experience we have with all of our AFI's and QFI.

A big thanks to Norman and SW and also to Paul H and Piers for their efforts.

    Cheers

  5. All the information you require has been on the forum for a long time now. You must read it all again and make up your own mind. I did!

I am a Paramotorist and that is as simple as it is for me, I am supporting the efforts of the PMC to make the sport safer and don.t see that the BHPA are offering me anything at all. It is up to you wether you support us or not.

On risk have, after negotiation, decided that the syllabus that we are running is improving the sport and have decided to offer a good insurance package for both instructors and students that are taking part in the course to improve their skills and safety in the sport.

In the same way that the BHPA offer insurance to their members.

At the end of the day it is up to you what you do but we are trying to improve the sport for everybody.

It is still deregulated at the moment and you can do whatever training course you want or none at all, just leave those that want to improve the sport get on with it.

Lets be supportive and stop being critical!
