  1. ... so going down Saturday with loads of beer and food. Weather looks OK to get a flight sometime over the weekend.

What a prediction :-) Great to see so many people there and in the air!

    Cheers

  2. Hello Dave

I followed your link yesterday to the "PPGTRUTH" site to have a look at the photo, but on the why it took me about 1 hour 20 minutes of going round and round in circles trying to open a Yahoo account so I could see it, finally it let me in, great i thought untill i started looking round and I thought I had joined a bible group, I presume it's an American site, their a funny nation and I don't mean in the comic sence, you must have a lot of time on your hands when your not flying!!!!!!

    David

    Its better up there

    David,

I've never had the time to go there, but I understand it's run by a bloke so 'one sided' he was 'encouraged' away from other groups. As he couldn't be wrong, he started his own 'truth' group where he can talk all he likes and if you correct him he can remove it and you.

    Dave,

    I thought you knew?

    Cheers

  3. I will report back tomorrow after a live engine run.

    Absolutely bl**dy brilliant!!!!

    Flick the switch and WOW!

    :lol::lol::lol::lol:

Can you still hear the pitch and the volume of the engine change?

The reason I ask... A few years ago I heard the pitch and volume change, so eventually landed to check (yes I was gutted and it took a minute of argument inside my head as I'd just taken off after a day of crazy wind and failed launches).

I found the flex hose connecting the exhaust had split. If I'd hadn't heard it, the exhaust would 'kissed'!!! the prop goodbye.

    Cheers

    Paul

  4. Has anyone been able to contact Ben and confirm that it is going ahead?

I have been trying to phone him but his phone seems to be dead.

    Paul D

I heard from him yesterday. It is on. I got tired up at work, so going down Saturday with loads of beer and food. Weather looks OK to get a flight sometime over the weekend.

    Cheers Paul

Call me if you need directions or encouragement!

  5. Strawberry and Cream supplier!

There are some places and beaches to fly, before, during and afer the bird season.

If you ask on the PilotsPPGclubUK or Lemmings forum I think you will find them.

I've not flown their yet, but know you can IF YOU COOPERATE with their agreed rules.

For the usual obvious reasons, motors in the wrong place at the wrong time will spoil it....

    Cheers

  6. I fancy this, I may only have enough holiday/£££ for a 7 day not a 10 day trip, but I'm still keen.

So what are the 'safe' options to get our paramotors out there?

Arrange for a new battery (and tank?) to be in Saudi and take it on the plane as luggage?

Arrange for a new battery (and tank?) to be in Saudi and post it the week before?

Find a buyer for new 'just' second hand Parajets (or ???), deliver and use them, but not bring them back?

Get the MOD to deliver it?;-)

    Any other ideas?

    Cheers

    Paul

  7. Haven't done a B line with motor yet. Had trimmers out on my Atis 2 but didn't find sink and didn't want to find the top of the Cu growing ever taller behind me. It was actually quite fun turning to get down. I hope I get used to the effect of the G's on my stomach because that seems to be my limiting factor. Maybe a good thing eh ?

    Thanks Francis

    Dave

    Dave,

This was my early post on rapid down v rapid run away.

Glad it had a happy ending. Ditch that wing and be a cowards like me and get a 'run away reflex' mate ;-)

    Cheers

    Paul

I can understand the rapid decent needs for a paragliding wing, and I recall the forum/pub discussions of various techniques after the paragliding lady went to 30,000 ft in Australia.

As usual, my memory has lost the detail :? but the idea of using the reflex wing with trimmers out then full speed bar to rapidly fly away (not just rapid decent) from the early stages of cloud suck I liked.

From the little I know - as I have little rapid descent experience - if cloud suck started happened while I'm flying my Action, I will fly away as fast as possible. Only if that fails will I consider a rapid decent.

    I have pasted below a topical write-up from http://www.flyparamania.com/Flightreport.htm

    Thoughts anyone?

    Cheers

    Pilot: Chris Calthrop

    Country: UK

    Model: Action 27

    Paramotor: Adventure Solo 210

I hope all is well with you. just a quick one as I am off to a kite event in Hunstanton today. Hoping for no wind to fly around a bit!

I had a cloud sucking experience couple of days back. I was thermalling up at 8ft/min toward a perfect cloud that rapidly turned ugly. I thought maybe time to exit the situation and straightened out to run away upwind as I didnt want to get any closer to the cloud and that was the only way "away" from it. But instead I was going up at 8ft/min+ backwards which got me panicking a bit. I then tried to spiral dive... I went to lock in but I was still climbing at 1ft/min.. I quit that and put the trims right up and yanked the speed bar out. Getting buffeted around I skimmed under the cloud and out the side, finally sinking at 1ft/min only...I ran and ran! I had climbed from 1500 to 2400 while trying to go down. Base at 2400. I noticed that everywhere I looked the wind was going toward this cloud at ground level... as I continued on my XC to canterbury I noticed a suck toward another "perfect" cloud.. I stayed well away.. For many this might have been the perfect thermal, but as my first cloudbase experience.. a bit nerve wracking. I write to say it was reassuring knowing that the reflex would stabilise the wing , giving the confidence to use full speed bar to get the %#$& out of there.

    Cheers, Chris

  8. Hi all,

For those who might be interested, I have put my Fresh Breeze Solo 210 paramotor, harness and Silex wing up for sale on E-bay. Take a look, the item number is 220246744787 (unfortunatley, I don't know how to put a link up).

  10. Hi Dave,

Scotland is a bit of a mystery to us at the moment, there are guys who paramotor up there and I have been looking for their website but not found it yet. If you make contacts please let us know as I could use a contact or two in the Highlands for Tip to Tip planning purposes.

Try on http://groups.yahoo.com/group/PilotsPPGclubUK/messages there are plenty across Scotland. Most also take great photos.

    Cheers

  11. Hmmm. More interesting that all but one want to add a secondary method to make their Parajet Volution cage safer.

Until it happened to me, after many hours of no problems, I was also saying to myself it is safe as I never let go of the brakes without securing them home first.

Better we act BEFORE an an accident or accidental death is caused by 'seat adjustment' or whatever.

On all forums, over six different people have recently reported this problem.

All are now modifying their cage, brakes or both.

What harm can physically preventing prop and brake handle meeting do?

    Cheers

    Paul

  12. I have a great long roll and no further use for the rest so if you or anyone wants a bit sent an SAE with a quid in it and I'll post you a metre and a half!

You will need cable ties to secure it just like in Ian's pictures. I wont be back to IoW til tuesday 3rd so you will have to wait a week.

    Francis,

Thanks I will do. Can you PM your address? No rush as I'm away to Iceland tomorrow

I wondered about using just smooth gaffer tape around the outer ring. I've no paint to worry about.

    Cheers

    Paul

P.S. Might be worth keeping enough for all the Tip 2 Tip machines?

  13. Yes prop strike of brake handles is very common on every machine out there! I have been collating statistics. There has been one fatal and one sus[ected fatal and two "wind ins" that released with height to spare.

Even netted cages with holes biggere than 40mm have the potential for a handle to go in. Setting up your hang point properly so that the cage does not tip forward at the top and also always parking your control handles helps, but I feel that these alone will not eliminate the porential for error or unforseen events.

My reaction has been tp use a very fine net with a mesh gap of 20mm. The air flow is virtually unnaffected but the danger is eliminated.

My present solution is not "pretty" and I and thinking of a more elegant one. I have done exactly as the originator of this thread but witha finer mesh for the reasons stated.

    Hi Francis,

Where did you get the very fine mesh?

    Cheers

    Paul

  14. Hello All

I hope this is of some help to you as it took a bit of research to pull it together.

My instructor was insistent that I apply safety netting to the cage of my Parajet Volution before starting training to protect my hands and more likely my lines in the event of a failed launch. The cage is very strong but the gaps would allow these and other foreign bodies to make contact with a spinning prop if you were unlucky.

Hope this is of some use?

    Best regards,

    Ian.

    Ian,

This is very very topical

My cage and brake handle met last Sunday and I will be fitting netting to my Volution cage ASAP.

I've always known this was possible, but dismissed it as I thought putting the brakes home in their magnets made it avoidable.

My last flight proved to me that a combination of circumstances will make it inevitable. I've since heard of others Volution cage owners who have the same misgivings - their prop has eaten a brake handle/line - and have fitted netting.

Malc reminded me when I landed of the Thai (?) guy on another make of paramotor without suitable netting, who spiralled in when his brake line met the prop and wound in. Need we say more?

Thanks for taking the time to give a detailed 'how to' message.

    Cheers

  15. Paul,

I would be interested in joining this syndicate as I live in Evesham which isn't too far away, how do I contact Tony for details?

    Thanks

    Dave

It should be quite quick to get there, it is from Bath as the site is very near the motorway junction - I've sent you a PM with the details

    Cheers

    Paul

  16. Totally agree about the site and stunning location. This is closest I've been to flying over a kids map.

Lush patchwork landscape, beautifully bendy River Severn, ship canal, dual carriageway, motorway, all other types of road, railway, all shapes of church, old runway, Welsh mountains and Cotswolds on either side.

Having three flights, lunch watching the GP, seeing Dave and then Malc :lol::lol: after their first UK flight after training in Spain, all added to a xxxxxxx great day. Also, good to see my Nova Rotor put to good use and topically after Francis mentioned one.

Tony is after more recruits if others want to join the syndicate.

    Cheers

  17. My wife worked for Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) for 7 years in the 80's and unfortunately won't entertain the idea of ever going back. Oh well...

Boys only trip then Alan? :)

  18. Hmmm. my recollection is the BAPC parascenders joined the HG after they 'invented' PG and gradually outnumbered the HG flyers.

If the BHPA does as we hope and train PPG from flat fields, it can only be a good thing.

I agree that independent instructors can be better, but most moans about 'qualified' or 'association' instructors are about their cost/overheads or people skills, not safety or their ability to teach.

History may repeat itself and the 'association' wil rename again with a Power in the name.

    Cheers
