  1. ...and Lo! There was flight, and my body was released from the grip of the firmament
By an almighty and irrepressible force
And i was able to soar, and i saw, many a wondrous vista that was laid out before me
My gaze resting upon the earth as if from the heavens
Verily, i transcended to a higher state of being, alive, and in realization of what achievement this is
And then, it was to be, as it can only be, to the terra-firma once more reunited

And on this occasion thusly, not once but twice: genuflect, with limbs out-stretched
Because i fecked up me landings and fell over  - no fluffed landings for nearly 2 years then two in one day!
    Bugger..

  2. I plan on getting to the field early - about 11 - taking off for my first flight at 12, land about 2:30 - 3, have a warm-up then have another cheeky 1-2 hour bimble before dusk.

Hopefully the air will be smooth and any thermals will be weak.

If it doesn`t go to plan i`ll have a snooze in the sun and take off later!

  3. Bought new by me and first flown Jan 2016.

Only selling as i`ve lost 20kg in weight since i started flying and now fly a Lift EZ size small - i`ve stayed with a Lift EZ as they`re great wings.

    Size medium, 100 - 165kg, Lagoon colour - blue/light blue.

Excellent overall condition - clean bright cloth and as-new risers and lines etc but 2 tiny (10mm) repairs - see pic. No idea how they happened..

Decent speed  - i get 28mph at only +2 trims so potential for more +++++.

Very easy to launch,  nil wind = nil dramas!

SOLD, any inspection welcome, located in Hampshire, post or willing to meet up if a reasonable distance.

PM me for any more info.

  4. I think you may be expecting too much from a 2-stroke fitted with a simple - rather crude some would say - diaphragm carb in expecting it to idle consistently for extended periods. 2-strokes will tend to get rather cool and oil-up when running at idle for a while and will need a `blip` of throttle to help.

1800rpm isn`t so low it`s in danger of stopping but is in the range where the engine will probably be shaking somewhat - not good for comfort, engine mountings or exhaust life, especially if it`s noticeably `four stroking` -  a sign that it`s running rich.

What are you doing that requires 3 minutes of idling whilst flying a PPG - thermalling?

Although it`s possible to fine-tune the carb to get the idle reliability you are after it`s going to take some tweaking which may not be available to you in the warranty period.

Generally a rich mixture will lower the idle speed and leaning out will increase - screw in to lean out to richen.

If you can adjust the low screw in the warranty period screw it in a smidgeon - not too much to affect throttle response off idle though - i found the factory settings to be on the safe side, ie: very rich.

  5. The first time i had ever been in an aeroplane i jumped out!

There was a period of time for a couple of years when i had taken off in a `plane but never landed in one.. (parachuting)

He then talked me through performing a quick decent manoeuvre back down to 500ft which made me sick.

    What was this maneuver, spirals?

I hate anything that spins round and round, fairground rides for example make me feel nauseous for hours afterwards, which is one reason i`ll never do anything fancy on a PPG..

How these dudes do SATS and tumbles is just bewildering to me, both the technical execution of them and the effects on the pilot, i gotta stop after just one moderately tight revolution.

  6. Superb work, and i admire your steadfast comittment to such a huge project, it`s all i can do to summon the enthusiasm to change my bikes` oil these days..

When do you think it`ll be ready to fire up?

    Well done on the NPPL..

BTW, we have a mutual aquaintance - Bren (works in the builders merchants near you)?

  7. What`s the cylinder like?

Is the cylinder on those engines Nikasil plated?

    If so no rebore options.

If the aluminum from the piston has only melted onto the cylinder without damage you might get way with removing the galling with mutiatic acid and fitting a new piston - after finding out why it seized in the first place..

    • Thanks 1
  8. Morning flights for the win!

I`ve only done a few early flights but they`ve all been excellent - no bumps, no thermals, nice and cool when preparing for the off. It`s always difficult in the eve in potentially mid-twenties afternoon heat having to make the decision to don bulky flight suits to add to the drama of launching first-time..

Despite landing at a relatively late 10:15 today there was no evidence of the thermic stuff kicking off despite the car temp gauge saying it was 23 degrees already on what was to become the hottest May bank holiday since records began.

A.M. flights mean you can fly for as long as you like or conditions allow plus there`s no worries about running out of light, and it gets warmer, not colder.

  9. Well, what a spectacular end to the weekend i had this morning..

Decided to go for an early flight and took off at 7:15 landing some three hours and 80 miles later. Superb conditions.

First on the `to-do` list was to climb to 10,000`. It was smooth  up there and not too chilly, quite manageable.

To be honest the view from 10K isn`t really that much different from 5/6k, and the effort to get there is something that i`ll not rush to do again, and with no cloud to look at it`s not that interesting...

    The beauty of PPG is that you can go from all the way up there one minute to skimming the ground the next.....or tree tops in this case;

    treetops.png

    ...then some recently drilled large field chasing my own shadow;

    low_stuff.png

    Next up, rapeseed is always good - so low you can smell it;

    rapeseed.png

There`s a local pilot i occasionally see in the air  - `Nucleon Man` i call him, and i saw him again today. I never fly with anybody else so it`s really cool to see another PPG in the same piece of sky, and those older Nuc`s don`t half shift, don`t they?

    Nucleon_man.png

    Stunning spring colour;

I made the most of this weekends blindin` weather and it came just in time as it looks like it`ll be a few weeks before my next airborne adventure as i wait for the grass to be cut in my regular field. The one i used this w/e has still not been prepared for crops as yet (will start this week)  - maize in May.

I was hoping to make flying career 200-hour mark this weekend but didn`t quite make it, that`ll have to be crossed off on my next flight.

I hope everyone else had as good a weekend in the skies as me, it`s been a very long day and is now time for a beer or two.

    Cheers, Hann.

    Lol.

So it's not just me then....

I'll try again tonight but I'm not hopeful. Thing is a more experienced pilot would probably climb through it but I'm not confident enough to do that, and landing immediately if I'm not happy is the safest option.

The launch and landing still count though ;-)

Yep, definately the right decision if you`re not happy, flights are to be enjoyed, not endured, and a take-off and landing is all good experience.

Do you have low hang point machine - that`ll tend to jiggle you about more, one reason i`m sticking with my Bulldog which i`m fully content with.

The Moster has done well these last couple of flight too, sub-4L/hr - just.

  11. Last nights effort was just a 2.5 hr 64 mile jobbie on my `Circa Soton` route which i`ve now done four times after i used to think it was too ambitious a route for the limited time and fuel of a PPG but have now realised it`s quite achievable, wind conditions have to be right, though. Despite flying in a big circle i never seemed to have the wind in my favour at any time last night. Shifting high pressure centre?

Take-off was again at half five in the residual thermals of the (very hot) day, it seemed for the first half hour or so i was forever battling sinking air without the benefit of much lift..

Calmed down thereafter but hit a horrible rough layer at 12 - 1600` (wind shear) in the last twenty minutes that made me think about diving down to my landing field (which was in sight) but instead hit the throttle and climbed over for the smoother stuff above. A bit uncomfortable but no dramas.

Think i`ll go for a morning flight tomorrow..

I do about 30/31mph (50kph) on full slow on my Hadron XX. Around 40mph on trims fully out.

    Impressive speed.

What motor, and what`s your engine speed and fuel consumption like at those speeds?

  13. Phase 1 completed this eve.

    17:30 take-off for a 2.75 hour / 74 mile tour of Hampshire.

Skies were a bit moody but it brightened up a bit for the last half hour or so, it was clear on the coast but the wind direction was nothing like forecast which prevented me from heading that way, the air was smooth but was getting a tad chilly after nearly three hours in the saddle so landed with plenty of daylight still left (and i needed to jettison some fluids).

    To be continued...

  14. .....this weekend is shaping up nicely for some epic flying opportunities.

A nice big blob of high pressure is forecast for the whole of the bank holiday weekend, maybe not wall-to-wall sun for Fri and Sat but low twenties warmth for Sun and Mon.

I`ve got some hours to catch up on after a lean winter/spring season.

I hope to report back on Monday with some tales of long XC`s and other airborne adventures...

  15. I bought an old ground handling wing before signing up for any courses and practiced with that for a few months after reading books etc on technique.

When i started the 2-week course in Spain i was already well ahead of the game in that department so could could concentrate on all the `other` stuff..

I chose Spain because i just didn`t fancy all the traveling, time wasting and prolonged, drawn-out effort of trying to fit it in with the UK`s weather and freetime.

Well, i say i didn`t fancy all the traveling - i rode my bike to Spain!

Motorcycle trip, flying and sun. Win-win-win.

  16. At what engine speed were the 4, 5-minute warm-ups?

If they were done at a lowish engine speed then it`s the nature of two-strokes to build up a certain amount of oil in the crankcase, this`ll also tend to promote spatter out of the exhaust.

A good run at normal operating speeds and temperatures will tend to burn off any excess.

Too rich a mixture will also do this - i found the factory settings to be far too rich causing a black-coloured plug, high fuel consumption and an oil-stained prop.

  17. Yep, you deffo need an additional battery pack to boost the `phones battery.

My iPhone can last over 3 hours running the app with the battery pack when in good conditions (warmish) but it has been turning itself off lately on these colder flights - either that or the `phone battery is getting very tired...

**edit**. I had a 2.5 hour flight today on a beautifully warm April day and after the flight the battery is still at 100%.
