Anyone fancy flying this Thursday?
I've got a day off
-
Good find guys
I agree - had a good weeks flying....
I flew yesterday from Exmoor to a friends field in Ladram Bay on the South Devon coast - what a beautiful place. Nice easy take off and cross downwind - only took an hour at 42mph full trim.
2 miles off Ladram Bay the engine broke again - loads of vibration, 30% power.....
I pulled the trimmers in and glided / thermalled the rest.
Gonna get the engine looked at tonight by Ted.
Michel is convinced I'm cursed I rekon!
Shortly after I landed another PPG was overhead - looked like a red Synthesis.....?
I'm free after work for some flying now the clocks have changed
-
Channel crossing - now we're talking!
I'm in!
So is Morgy!
RIB chase boat essential though.
Was a great trip while it lasted.
I was GUTTED to miss out on that soaring to the Needles.
I committed a cardinal sin whilst ridge soaring.....
My motor stalled on idle whilst at about 150 feet AGL and Instead of pushing out into the lift and attempting to restart (not many landing options down below though) or continuing to ridge soar and top landing if necessary, I turned into the hill in order to 360 and restart over the middle of the field.
Needless to say things happened very quickly - I hit rotor and couldn't find the bungee start straight away. I was committed to a FAST down wind landing. I didn't attempt to complete the turn from 180 degrees to 360 degrees as I was being thrown around by rotor. I hit the deck fast - no way could I run it off! Two somersaults with motor on my back later I stand up to find my Miniplane cage obliterated.
I feel very lucky to have walked away unscathed.
Anyway.....welding being done, replacement parts ordered from Michel Carnet and a week off coming soon.....
PS Thanks again Morgy for the pick up - I owe you one - wonder when it will be? - Top Gear rules!

Hi Simon,
Do you have any contact details for a PPG oufit in Jeddah?
Going to visit my Dad out there and keen to do some flying with a rented motor....

Luke

Hi Guys,
Had a flight with Pete from Barry's this morning.
Quite cold up there.

Anyone flying tomorrow?
I'm keen

I had this problem on my PAP until I was told by Michel Carnet I was using too much oil.
Diego of Miniplane recommends 1.6% (160mls per 10L unleaded) for the Top 80.
Ever since, plug is perfect and not so much blue tinged smoke coming out of the exhaust.

Luke

The WG8 carb has a fixed high rpm jet (non adjustable)
The long slender screw adjusts carburation up to around 50% max rpm.
The conical screw adjusts the idle by adjusting where the throttle lever stops and therfore the position of the butterfly in the carb.
There's loads of info on the TOP 80 yahoo group.
If its running lean there is a problem elsewhere!
You'll be able to tell if you need to adjust the long slender screw as the engine won't pick up nicely from idle if fuel is restricted at this range.

I would recommend the Bulldog from Clive Bunce. I have flown it and it is excellent. A lot of thought has gone into the harness geometry etc.
It looks great too.
Remember try before you buy!

Steve,
What tank have you bought. Is it a top 80 PAP or something else?

Sounds good Dave
This coming weekend is due NW...

Anyone fancy a long xc with overnight bivvy next weekend?
Long range forecast suggests high pressure and light winds by friday.
Possibly Devon / Dorset / Cornwall. I'm open to ideas.....

Great pics Seymore.

Afraid so Mike
Wednesday onwards looks good
-
Nick - see you soon
Seymore - sounds like an ideal way to spend the day kiting in the morning and flying in the afternoon.
I'm off all week so let me know when you're going flying and I'll join you.
I'm planning on going down to cornwall last weekend of Jan for some flying and kiting too.
