It is designed for running, but you don't have to set your route to follow roads.
I've always found it good for a quick and rough planner to calculate a XC route.

Anyone else having problems with the site being slow?

A personal favourite of mine is around the St. Mary's loch area. Great piece of countryside with hills and valleys west of the loch.
