  1. This is BRILLIANT!!!

    Thank you!

I have been to Laragne a few times with my motor and have been looking for other airfields I could fly from to explore the mountains a bit more. This really opens up the horizons.

Now all I need is more time to actually do this and I am all set :)

  2. Hi Barry,

Sorry to hear about the troubles with the neighbours. I had a chance to fly at this site last weekend following Mark around and down the coast. A beautiful if slightly chilly flight. I live in SW London and this is my closest coastal site. Please put me on your list of your interested local pilots and let me know if you decide you can accept a few more members.

Oh, and I already comply with rule number 7 :)

    Thank you,

    Eugene

  3. Thank you, guys.

This sounds reasonable. I forgot that I can take the motor out of the frame and send it off to the manufacturer.

Now I need a few nice flyable weekends to make my next-motor research a little less theoretical :)

    Cheers,

    Eugene

  4. I am going to be getting a new motor soon and after looking around I got my short list down to about three - 2 two strokes and a V5. Now looking a little more into it, it sounds like there is quite a bit of ongoing service required for the two strokes - for example the Moster.

I am not terribly mechanical, and other than the most basic torque checking I would rather have someone who know what they are doing do the work.

    Here is my question:

Who does your 2 stroke service? (I mean serous service that requires opening the engine and the carb)

How do you do get your motor there?

For example, for the Moster, after 100 hours you are supposed to replace a reed valve and a number of carb components. I know for some of you guys on this forum it sounds simple, but I would rather not have the guts of my motor all over the dining room table... So what are the alternatives?

Do you send to the Vitorazzi factory?

    Thanks,

    Eugene

  5. Let's look at the weather one more time tomorrow - currently the forecast for Brighton area is almost due east wind... Not the safest thing to have on the SW facing cliffs.

If the forecast holds will I be able to tempt you to come fly over Avebury with me? :P

    :wingover:

Actually... I take that back - looking at the terrain map of this area on google I think it would be great to go exploring the Firle ridge and the hills inland and to the east of Newhaven, plus the Cuckmere delta and that whole area looks nice too.

Now let's just hope the forecast stays on the light side :)

  6. Hi Robin,

I am in SW London and have been looking for people to fly with in the Newhaven area.

I got in touch with a couple of guys on this forum last week and was even planning to go fly there today, but the forecast was just too bad and I ended up doing other things, even though now it sounds like I missed some nice smooth air this morning. Oh well, can's get them all :)

Let me know next time you are heading out and maybe we can connect.

  7. Yep. I will make sure I read them.

I will check the weather one more time Friday afternoon and make the final call then.

Also, I spoke with Luke a little earlier today. Hope the weather hold and I get a chance to fly with you guys this Saturday.

    Cheers,

    Eugene

  8. I have posted on a different thread - I would love to come fly Saturday morning.

I think that will be the least windy part of the weekend.

I have not been to Seymore's field before. Is that where everyone is meeting?

I will try to track down Seymore and get his permission in the next day or two, but if the plan is to meet somewhere else could you guys drop me a line on PM?

    Cheers,

    Eugene

  9. Right now Saturday morning looks like the least windy part of the weekend.

    Newhaven area?

If the forecast holds Brighton to Beachy head may be doable :)

Probably a little too light for soaring, but with my slow wing I do not know if I will make it there if it gets windy :(

    Eugene

  10. Thanks for the great map, Barry.

Now all we need is for this crazy wind to calm down.

I am really hoping that the forecast for this mellower Monday (bank holiday) holds. Anyone going anywhere?

  11. Have not flown it yet :)

Promised the wife that I will not fly it until the reserve is freshly repacked and everything is set up right on it.

Found a nice little airfield nearly and will give it a try this weekend if it is not too windy.

I hope we connect in a couple of months when the weather is nicer and I am ready to go exploring Wales :)

    Cheers,

    Eugene

  12. Hi Guys,

I am getting my PPG reserve freshly repacked this saturday morning and plan to take out my gear and air it out for a couple of hours above some beautiful English coutryside (somewhere W or SW of London) :)

Depending on the weather it may be Sat afternoon or some time Sunday.

    Anyone cares to join me?

  13. I have flown many hours on my old Pro Design Effect a 1(1/2) about 20 kg over the top on the large and have flown some hours on a DHV2 wing also over the top by about the same margin.

Here are a couple of things to remember :

    1. The lines and the wing structure are tested AT LEAST to 6g load of the top of the certified range - so if you are 10-20% over the top that will not even begin to stress the glider (unless you are planning to do a lot of acro with your motor)

    2. the lines do not stretch, they SHRINK - as in Cs and Ds getting shorted than the load bearing lines like the As - and testing them often is a very good idea no matter if you are flying with a motor or not.

    3. since we usually motor in smoother conditions the collapses are less likely than in paragliding.

The only reason to go to a reflex wing is that you go Faster. That is all great, until you do have a collapse and then all this speed does very funny things with the recovery and airspeed dynamics. My instructor has a wonderful saying: "Acrobatics is what happens when aerobatics go wrong"

I think for a beginner an nice 1/2 (ENB) wing is the best choice - you will go slower, but that is a good thing, also if you do get a collapse it will recover MUCH better than a full reflex wing.

I am not sure there is such a thing as a wing unsuitable for paramotoring. The last issue of the paramotor mag had a nice story of two guys paramotoring in Pakistan. ...one of them was flying Advance Omega 8 - about as close as you can get to a an uncertified race ship and live :)

People tend to get into trouble motoring becuase they go too fast too low - acro or ground skimming. if you are sensible with it there is no reason why you should not be able to put a couple of hundred hours on your trusty 1/2 with the motor and enjoy every minute of it.

    Just my 2p.

  14. Ahhh. I thought there was a reason

    Well, it was worth asking.

I know there are a few beaches along the western coast of England and Wales that allow people to drive their 4x4s on - I am hoping the rules should be a bit more forgiving there. :wingover:

Well, I will make the final decision on what I am getting after the flying show and then get to the business of meeting the local pilots in my area and all the other great places to fly :D (I am hoping to have my new machine some time in January)

Thank you for the info, Simon - the airfield link is great - just what I was looking for! More food for daydreaming until I can get motoring again 8) .

    Eugene

  15. it is very likely that this question has been asked many times before, but here it is again:

Is it legal/acceptible to launch from the beaches?

For example http://maps.google.co.uk/?ie=UTF8&ll=50.57859,-2.469993&spn=0.008857,0.01929&t=h&z=16 is a spot near Weymouth that seems like a perfect spot to park the car and have a nice long beach skimming flight. Is there a reason this can not / should not be done (admittedly I have not checked the airspace restrictions above this particular beach)

I know this is a bit premature to ask this before I get my motor (another month or so), but the planning and checking out the places I want to fly keeps the juices flowing :)

I made this a fairly broad question becuase there are many other beaches I would like to fly from and over.

    Thanks,

    Eugene

  16. Thank you guys for the replies.

I must say that I am glad to hear I was not the only one feeling like a passenger in the Walkerjet - a strange feeling if you are a PG pilot and used to feeling/controlling the wing with your bottom as much as your hands

The biggest attarction of Bailey is the fact that I do not have to worry about mixing oil and petrol before each flight, but I guess it is a minor issue, especially given that by the time I add the manual start and the active suspension it will be MUCH more expensive.

But I will wait a couple more weeks and check it out in person and the flying show.

One thing I have been wondering about is fitting a nice three blade prop to the Bailey (something like the one Nirvana advertises). A lot of the thrust and noise come from the props and spending a bit of money to clean it up and make it more efficient may pay off well down the line.

Any experience with replacing the standard Bailey prop?

    Thanks guys,

Keep the comments coming. I will let you know what I end up getting, right after I ask you about the local flying sites 8)

    Cheers,

    Eugene

  17. Hi,

I am going to get a new motor in the next few weeks. I was planning to make the final decision after the Flying Show on the 27th, but one of the brands I was hoping to see is not going to be there, so I have to ask my questions here.

I am looking for a bigger motor - I am 6'3" and a bit over 100kg on the bathroom scales. Oh, and I want to be able to take my wife flying tandem every now and again... But also I am a PG pilot and like flying XC and flying in the Alps. I know these requirements are not easy to combine, but it is worth a shot :)

I am down to a couple of motors: Bailey 4V with the 130cm prop, and the Kobra Rocco Super (Simonini 202cm + 3 blade 130 cm prop), and there is the outside chance of the Powerjet 160 Rotron.

Can you guys comment on these motors if you have experience with them? Ease of use, reliability, comfort in flight (I know this one is subjective) and noise levels, flying power off?

One motor that I would have liked is the Nirvana Instinct, but between the lack of dealer support in the UK and the stratospheric price tag (not to mention the waiting list until March...) it is off the list.

    Thanks,

    Eugene
