  1. Evening All I'm after a GPS unit. I know this has been done to death, but there are that many out there, it's hard to decide. I'm not after bells and whistles - just something that gives me location, location memory, tracking, speed, height, route planning etc. The more compact the better - something that will fit nicely in a pouch that I can clip to my harness. As for budget? Well I wouldn't mind a second hand unit - £100? Colour screen would be nice, as would Garmin - but I'll see what comes up - might be able to squeeze the budget a little It's more of a backup device as opposed to something I'll need desperately in the air... 2. Good tips guys - I will let you know how I get on Cheers
  3. Nigel - like it I'll try and find the owner information - see how it goes... It's interesting, one of the guys in work was asking me "Can you just land and re-fill", and as I was explaining the fact you can't land on a Shell garage, I started thinking about navigation - would you guys normally fly between grass strips, or simply fly around the local area for a while before returning? I guess you can do both - would just be interesting to hear what you guys do or what is the 'norm'!
  4. Evening All I'm soon due to be entering the wonderful world of PPG, and already have a club/equipment lined up etc (thanks for everyone's help so far) In a nutshell, I was wondering what you guys do for take-off/landing sites when you're outside of the club environment? Say there's a nice field nearby, how would you normally go about using it, once or a few times (not a permanent base)? There's a few nice sites round where I live that would be nice to use, but I'm struggling to find out who the owners are etc. I think this would open up the possibilities of "flying home" if you like, not having to return to the same field you took off from... I may have answered my own question there (finding land owner permission) but would be interested to hear any stories. Cheers Maz
  5. irm750 - yes, I am aware All opinions are very valued for at this point though, so keep up the debate!
  6. Evening All I'm a newbie here, and am in the process of researching equipment etc... I've had some excellent advice from some local suppliers, and whilst this information isn't conflicting as such, I am trying to establish the best/safest stuff. I'm a heavy lad - tipping in over 18 stone (but reasonably fit and agile) so I know I need a big wing. My overall budget is 7k... I was originally advised to go for a 34 wing, and that a Dudek Synthesis would be ideal, then I was advised on a Cabrio Synth (designed for trikes) but I hear this is far too big for one person, and that a 34 would do. This may be a relatively easy decision, but having said that there are plenty of brands. Then there's the motor... To start with, I was advised of a Fresh Breeze Simonini, then was advised on a Parajet Volution Macro (?) Either way I need something powerful. Not sure where to go with this, and I know the specs can dictate whether or not there is a pull start etc. Doesn't have to be top of the range titanium and it doesn't have to make the tea - just adequate and safe! I think picking the wing might be a much easier decision than the motor, and if I can get both together within £7k it would be good? I just want to say, I'm not trying to duel the advice I've been given by different people - merely trying to increase my own knowledge and make a decision that will cost me a lot of money! Sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I know I've let motors creep in on here - please move to the newbie forum should you need to. All the best Maz
  7. AlanK - nice vids - I have a question (noob alert)... The guy in the second video down (by Outkast) is getting some very well defined pitch control there above the reeds (from about 3:15 onwards) - he seems to be rotating (pitch wise) up and down over the surface? Is he using power alone for this? My limited understanding so far tells me that the brake lines allow for turning through a 'yaw' effect, by slowing one side of the wing down - I didn't realise you could get such defined pitch control also? I welcome you to correct me
  8. Thanks FlyingDoc I've already got a few nice routes planned out in my head, although I need to remember I won't be cruising at 90kts this time. I fancy the welsh coast (done it loads of times in fixed wing) but I'm guessing it will be a far different experience PPG Dont' suppose you have any online pics/videos at all? Cheers Maz
  9. aquatix - appreciate that, thanks... I'll let you know how I get on with Andy, and may take you up on that viewing - I only work in Maghull, so would be easy to get to you. Perhaps when I'm up and running, we could meet up for a flight or something? I was actually at Ince airfield a couple of months back having a look around - I was tempted at microlighting (I have a PPL(a) and fly a PA38 out of Liverpool, but was looking for more freedom and less cost). I have to admit, the paramotoring is something I've wanted to do for a few years now, and I think the added freedom of being able to pack everything up in the car, and launch from your feet, is the selling point for me! Alan - some nice links there, thanks for those Cheers Maz
  10. Hello All My first post - go easy on me I've been flying fixed wing single engine piston for a few years now, but am really keen on taking up paramotoring. I've been researching into things such as flying locations, etc but one thing that has got me stuck is the equipment. I genuinely know nothing abut the different brands and varieties that are available. I'm not the lightest or shortest of people - about 6ft 2 and 18 stone - so what I'm looking for is something safe and smooth, nothing fancy. I know the combination of wing and engine is important, so can someone give me starting point, or advice as to a good all round wing/engine for beginners? Cost is important (as always) but I'm not going to be tight on safety - I've seen some really expensive gear, and I just don't know the difference between say a Dudek wing and a Paramania one! I just want quality gear - nothing flash. As for other things such as the harness and headset etc, I can think about these once I have a good idea in my head as to the above... Any advice at all will be a massive help - and who knows, may see you in the air one day! All the best Maz Update: I wrote this post a few days ago before submitting it here. Since then, I've spoken to Andy Walkden at flyschool, who most likely will become my instructor (not had a chance to meet up yet and get going). Any advice on the above would still be great - and I'll be looking for flying buddies around the area if anyone's interested in the near future!!
