If you buy our MicroAvionics headset, then you do not have to buy the airband radio immediately as the headset can be reconfigured by changing a few small DIP switches to convert from PMR to airband settings. Airband and PMR require different headset electronics to drive the radios and hence the small DIP switches.

    Alternatevly our headset has capability to connect two radios to one headset.

    Hi all,

    Still confused about radios! i have settled for a set of PMR's so that i can talk to my 'ground crew', at the moment i am only travelling out and back or in a triangle, next set is to see how far i can get, however this raises another question.

    How do i talk to a chase/recovery car AND the various air traffic zones that i will pass (i worked out that i have a range of about 70 miles, and will pass at least 5 airfields.

    It would be possible to do something like the below. However, without giving confidential information away the below has a little detail that is not required and makes the design techally out of required spec. The other problem is Airband radio model. There are a couple of radios that have a few design problems and these need extra design to make the headsets work properly.

    To an experienced electronics engineer it is quite possible to convert a Goldstar headset, this would also require a radio lead change for best results otherwise a remote PTT would be required instead of the onboard PTT. Extra care is required as mentioned above with a few airband radios. Also there can be issues if the design is not right with one airband radio if used with the rubber duck type antenna.

    In short... 2m and PMR is easy to conect to, airband is not hard but there are a few querks to get this version working with all radios.

    I've been doing some digging and it appears that the A3 requires a pre-amp and a different PTT circuit.

    I think I can make up a small box which you plug your headset in to. This could attach to the radio.

    This box would house a 9v PP3 battery, the pre-amp and a pair of flying leads which plugs into the radio.

    The 3.5mm jack would just extend the speakers as they would work.

    The 2.5mm jack I believe would become a stereo jack, where the tip would be grounded in a new PTT switch ( excellent as it could be extended on a longish lead, fed down your arm under your flying suit, to a velcro PTT finger switch, which saves pushing the Tit on your headset to transmit, I've already done this with my Headset :D ) and the output of the Pre-Amp to the ring connection.

    The Pre-Amp kit is available from Maplin @ £4, PP3 Battery £2, Clip for Battery £1, Box £3, jacks, sockets, cable & PTT switch £5 = approx build cost of £15.

    Saves buying a new headset just for one radio!

    The box could also house a Double Pole Double Throw switch which could switch between a PMR / 2M Radio and the Airband..... Just an idea :D

  4. Sure the prices can be cheaer using other cheaper brands. However I think you will find we are very competative compared to our main competition, actualy we are cheaper and offer a superior headset. We had our headset independantly tested for noise penetration, it was found to be 3 times quieter than our uk competitor.

    If you want a headset that out performs others with loads of features then there is nothing else on the market. However if you want a cheaper headset then yes you can buy another brand, the choice is yours.

    Just to let you both know, the R&D in MA is a constant design process. Just the cost alone of certifying our helmets costs about £6k, hence they do not cost £50 or so. You have to balance the whole price comparecd to sales and as you know the uk market is very small.

    You asked about the built in helmets. Now hopefully not all helmets are the same but before the days of MicroAvionics I used to import a Spanish helmet which worked fine. However it did not seal against the ears very well. This is why we do not manufacture a built in headset/ helmet. A headset that is worn underneath the helmet creates a far better seal... your ears are priceless.

    I understand that its nice to pull the eardefender away from the helmet for that freeflight feeling....
