Steve
Came across this on YouTube, a fuel monitor using a modified bike computer. Excellent idea.

tommcb6016
That's a bit cool! Can't find it on ukppg either, but thats pretty normal I would probably buy a lot more from them if the website was a bit easier to find anything.
notch
Looks like the flowmeter is from here: http://www.btflowmeter.com If that's the case, it's most likely a turbine flow meter. I would be a bit concerned about the pressure drop across such a device - i.e. you guarantee the fuel pump would cope with delivering full fuel flow @ max rpm? Someone with more mechanical knowledge than me should pipe up...
ptwizz
My experince of flow meters is that they are designed to present minimal resistance to flow. Mechanical types usually consist of either a turbine or a gear motor, which spins freely and has a magnetic sensor to provide a signal. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flow_measurement#Turbine_flow_meter It should be noted that the flow meter measures volume, not mass flow. If you fill up from the can in your warm comfy car at 20°, then fly in air at 0°, the last of your fuel will occupy less volume than it did when you filled up, and will be consumed more quickly. mariusp
If you are interested in a flow meter DIY project, i think you will find in the below links most of the required information; doesn't look too complicated but some skills in electronics are welcome, i must admit i didn't try to build it, let us know if you will succeed. http://www.alpentourer.com/accessories/ ... meter.html http://www.possi.de/spritmesser/spritmesser.html http://www1.conrad-uk.com/fas6/fh.php?f ... w%3Dsearch http://www1.conrad-uk.com/scripts/wgate ... results=
bholleran
I previously build something similar to this but it only had realtime data, liters per min. I may be able to improve the original design. To have the running totals etc I can get the components delivered to me, and supplied to you for approx £50 if anyone is interested let me know, I would probably need to to order about 40 units to get it at this price. But if you can get me a list of interested people I could confirm exact pricing.
ptwizz
I can't help feeling a device similar to those used in domestic heating oil tanks would be a simpler solution. They're available from about £60, but would need to be adapted for battery power. Pete.
haze
Hey Barry, That's definitely something I'd be interested in...and I can think of at least 4 or 5 others who would. Might be worth investigating.
flyingfergus
I researched flow meters & work with a company that uses these types of devices. I also spoke to Paul Bailey as I have a Bailey V4. Basically because of the pulsing of the fuel the accuracy is +/- 10% which is not accurate enough as far as I was concerned. In the end I bought a R series Sensor(see links below), & got Baileys to make me a bespoke rectangular tank with a fitting for the sesnor ( I changed form a V3 to a V4 so he didn't charge any extra). Let me worn you its not cheap but it depends what you want to prioritise on equipment. http://www.gillsensors.co.uk/content/RSeries.htm http://www.gillsensors.co.uk/content/gauge.htm Its very accurate & ignores the sloshing around on turns etc. Each light is 1/3 litre & I have landed plenty of times with no more than 100ml left in the tank. It doesn't enable you to see which is your most effecient flying rev / speed that an accurate flow meter would, but it gives me the information I need to know how far & how long I have left in the air.
