matt_k
I had a ground handle of a friends Dudek synthesis the other day and noticed how much evenly the wing comes up from the center with split a's compared to my revolution which kinda comes up from the outside first What is the advantages and disadvantages of split a's? pete_b
Advantage you pull just the centre of the wing up as you found out, cant think of any disadvantages (but Im sure some one will )
norbertflyer
Disadvantages: Higher drag, but you'll never detect, nor measure it. Higher cost, but you'll never detect, nor measure it.... Other advantages: Better wing profile and increased arc/stability. Easier big ears. With the same caveats for the disadvantages ...... aquatix
The Revo 2 always seemed to come up straight and even despite not having split A's. The Nucleon seems to take longer for the tips to pressurise, as they often stay a bit soft and floppy until a few steps into the run, BUT this seems to help the main part of the wing stay centred overhead without ever going off to one side. When I read the manual for my free flying wing it said to launch with all the A's, and the split A's were only to facilitate big ears - but in another part it mentions that just pulling up on the centre A's works better in some conditions ..... On balance I prefer a wing to have them, even if it only makes things slightly easier .....
fanman
I posted a long time ago on this forum that I felt the Revolution was disadvantaged by its lack of split A's and received an onslaught of comments saying I was wrong. Consequently I bought a Revolution of my own and after spending several hours experimenting with launching and flying with the standard set up then modified the A riser to split A's. The difference in launch characteristics was dramatic. The wing was far less susceptible to being slightly out of wind and also lost its annoying tendency to bunch up in the center during a reverse. The A line layout ideally needs a slightly different distribution to work as well as some rival manufacturers split A equipped gliders work but then this would have been done at the factory if they had designed split A's from the start. In summary, benefits - many, disadvantages - none. I have now sold the wing so unfortunately had to return it to its inferior standard state as I felt I shouldn't pass on a wing outside its certified state. This was a shame as I had also fitted ALC to it so removed that as well.
outkast
I had a ground handle of a friends Dudek synthesis the other day and noticed how much evenly the wing comes up from the center with split a's compared to my revolution which kinda comes up from the outside first What is the advantages and disadvantages of split a's? My last wing had split As and was a doddle to launch, it came up really easy, having said that as you saw at two tree my Revo2 does just the same although I have found I just need to stay on the As for a tad longer Dave
