With regard to your .mts file: My panasonic produces these files and I edit them very easily with Cyberlink Powerdirector 8. I went through a few editing software programs (Adobe, Sony, Pinnacle), before I found Powerdirector, and none of them could handle .mts files smoothly. I tried a bunch of different packages and none of them could provide smooth playback but PD does it really well and has some nice editing features.
