In 1983 the motorola dynaTAC 8000X was the first mobile phone.

It was 0.8 kg, had a whopping 30 mins talk time with 8 hours standby. Also, that in only took 10 hours to charge it!

But you do get what you pay for... It was only £1900 in 1983' when launched.

I had the Motorola 2800 in the late 80's, it was roughly the size and weight of a house brick!! If I remember correctly the one you are talking about had a very large battery pack and resembled an army field telephone ?.........

Those were the days Simon :D

I used to work with a communications pioneer in Asia. He would tell the story of his trials and tribulations trying to sell the first mobile phone system into Hong Kong.

He was repeatedly rejected by various large Chinese corporations. It didn't help that their original business projections could not evidence more than a total market of 9 units !

Fortunately Hutchinson Whampoa took a gamble on his idea, introducing their commercial service (selling dynaTACs) in 1984. From this he went on to start a small company called Orange !

Today Hong Kong has over 12 million mobile phone subscribers, for a population of 7 million !

Some business projection
