EDD209
Hi folks... I will soon be returning to PPG after a 7 year break due to a back injury. Because of that I need the lightest weight kit I can find, so I'm thinking Parajet Maverick + Atom80. I've only logged 6 flights since training so I've decided on an Ozone Spyder 3 to start, just not sure on the size. I'm 64kg with my kit on, so I guess all up weight with a few litres of fuel would be around 90-93kg. I know that around the 70-85% mark of the wing's weight range is recommended, so I guess that the 20m,22m and 24m would all be ok for me. However, considering the low thrust of the Atom 80 I'm concerned about how the size will affect take off, climb rate, handling etc. Even at this low weight, I'd like to avoid having to run too far with it in low/nil wind. Any advice as to pros and cons of these 3 sizes in my situation would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
alan_k
Hi Ed (?), Firstly it is recommended to include the weight of the wing in the total but exclude fuel as that is used up. Wing is 4kg so including instruments lets say your all up weight is 95kg. You are almost at the top of the 20m range, so with the atom80 I would avoid that size. Between the 22 and 24m you will get a little bit more lift and less running with the 24m. You would still be well into the top half of the range with the 24m so really the choice is yours. Do read the manual, higher wing loading is a bit more dynamic than lower.
EDD209
Thanks for the advice Alan, yes seems like 24 would be the best choice then. Cheers, Tim
