  1. I was considering a volution,  but those weights are crazy. Is it really that heavy?

    Sorry to hijack thread, but I have been unable to find out the weight differences between the maverick,  zenith and volution. 

    Does anyone know what the difference is between the 3 (with the same engine obviously)

    Maybe I'm overthinking it then. I just assumed you wouldn't be able to leave it in any bag.

    Although my old ground handling wing doesn't have a dewbag or mushroom bag. I'm not too fussed if that get a bit of mould on it,  hopefully my proper one will and thats what I'm thinking about..

    Looking at the pics of the Dudek Dewbag, that would be great if you can just leave it to dry in one of those.

    Not sure if there is a prize for the wierdest post of the year. If so, here is my entry 😀

    I'm trying to get some groundhandling practice, but everywhere is soaking wet. So even though I've only got a cheap groundhandling wind, I need to dry it out afterwards.

    Having done it so far by just spreading it out as much as possible in the living room, and suffering the obvious marital problems that occur with such a plan, my mind has gone into overdrive thinking of other solutions I can use in the garage. I cant be the first surely?

    Please post any novel ideas and pics of how you dry your wings here please?

    So far, I'm thinking:

    crossing backwards and forwards across the garage a few times. Not sure if I would have to drape the glider over it(is it so thin it could cause damage), or use clothes pegs on the trailing edge (would that also cause damage?) Has anyone dried their wing on a clothes line outside and did it cause damage

    Or similar. I think you would have to concertina the wing garage floor to ceiling across its back to front, if that makes sense. Not sure the gaps would be wide enough when you get to the leading edge profiles. Would be draped over almost in a IVVVI shape

    3. A homemade version of 2. I'm wondering about replacing the metal ends of the above with 2 garage-width lengths of plywood hanging from the ceiling, with holes the diameter of 40mm plastic plumbing pipes cut into them. Then concertina the wing over these front to back as above.

    In all of the above cases, I've not really thought about the wires and risers. I'm assuming they could get in a right mess.

    Its such a common problem, someone out there must have a good way of doing this. Or do I just need to man up and tell the wife to deal with her cream carpet...

  5. Have you thought about doing a tandem yourself to give you an idea what is involved?

    I did one, and even to my inexperienced eye I certainly wouldn't say it was trivial. 

    If flying tandem is your main driver, it me be worth looking at microlight, as practically things are no different solo to tandem. Obviously you get a lot more regulation.

  6. What is it there for then? 

    There are documented cases of brake lines,  throttle cables and hands going into the prop. So my assumption is that is what the netting is for.

    And if that is the case, why would you have gaps in it? I'm not trying to argue, just genuinely intrigued as to whether it's a consideration when buying and why? 

  7. Started looking at paramotors to get an idea of what machine I'd be looking to buy.

    One thing I'm a bit confused about is the netting and cages. It seems there are very few that have what I'd consider fully secure netting and cages. All of them either seem to have largish gaps in the cage, or fairly large gaps in the netting. Is this an issue?

    The ones that use wiring rather than netting especially seem really problematic.
    For example:

    Pap Tinox - what looks like at least a 6" gap in frame and huge holes between the individal wiring

    Miniplane - netting rather than wires, but a 6" gap in frame

    Wasp - The netting looks to have 2" by 2" holes in it which presumably a hand could go through, and again a huge gap in the frame in centre

    Even looking at the mainstream stuff, the parajet volution seems to have a big enough gap in the frame for a throttle or hand to go through.

    To a newbie, it seems crazy, is there a reason for it? Or is it not as big an issue as I'm thinking it is?

    Perhaps I have over complicated the question by putting the fuel burn specs in.

    I am primarily trying to work out which engines are suitable for my weight, and which I should consider in terms of reliability etc.

    Good shout on bailey, dont want to be stuck with something unsupported. 

    I mainly just want straight and level A to B and maybe some low level. 

    Is atom likely.to be any good based on my weight? 

  9. I'm around 85-90kgs and looking at what machine to buy. I'll be a beginner. I'm training next year, but if a decent used machine turns up I'm tempted to buy one now.

    The place I'm going to learn to fly at uses atom 80s, and they reckon they are plenty for my weight. I also like the sound of a quieter motor. Is anyone else of this weight flying on an Atom 80, and if so how do you find it? Or am I over what the engine would be comfortable with?

    Ideally I'd rather stay away from the moster as from what I understand they are thirsty, noisy and probably too much power for a beginner of my weight. And I keep hearing about cracked exhausts!

    Are there any other good options for engine? Not decided if I am going to buy new or used yet (possibly a combination of both). If I go with used, I'll obviously have even less choice, which might not actually be a bad thing!

    I'm also not very mechanically minded, so need something thats easy to look after and doesn't need too much tinkering. And would prefer something that wasn't too niche and without backup.

    I started putting together a list of engines and specs. Anyone care to advise which to consider and which to avoid? Or is it really a split between atom and moster?

  10. I had a go at this tonight,  but unfortunately the wind had dropped  too much. Got it up in the air a couple of times but wasnt enough wind to keep it there. Unless my field wasnt open enough of course.

    Will try in the morning. Quick question though. My wing is old and doesn't have split As. Do I just hold the middle A wires directly, or do I hold all As?
