  1. You know i saw that reply coming before i even wrote the original post....... I wouldnt trust a £50 helmet to protect a brick The shell is of a well known origin (still trading) and it actually ex-military, it has a single tiny chip in a non-structural area which apparently renders it "beyond economical repair" - I would trust this 10x more than a chinese ebay special.
  2. So, I'm confused now. If i take off, am i actually allowed to land? !!!
  3. I just won a nice carbon fibre open face helmet for silly money on ebay (£2, so why not) However it is totally empty, no edge strip, no lining, no strap. Are these sort of things available anywhere? I imagine some sort of custom helmet supplier?
  4. Is there likely to be any chance, at all, (with an amount of begging and pleading) that I may every be able to take off from close to my home town, marked in the middle "Melbourne"? Discuss...
  5. Hi Alan, thanks for the welcome. It *Might* be that simple, but i fear it probably wont be: If you look up "Melbourne, Derbyshire" you will see that it is aprox 4.5km from the end of the runway and DIRECTLY under the aproach path. Yes I could take off and stay low until i get out of the CTR into the CTA then climb to 1000ft or so, but I think they would be very uncomfortable in having me flying only a few hundred feet under an aproaching DHL 737 cargo plane... Still trying to find contact details, they dont make it easy do they!!
  6. Morning all, I'm picking up my first paramotor and wing this week, and obviously I am going to want to fully check everything is 150% good before attempting to use it. So - this wing is an Airwave Wave, apparently has aprox 30 hours on it, stored loosely packed. What should I look for when checking it over?, baring in mind that its an older wing but low hours.
  7. Update 2: This afternoon I had (again) a good and very interesting conversation with the BHPA, and it seems that we are now hopefully working on a case to submit to the CAA for an exemption. So in short: > CAA - willing to listen and not at all obstructive, practically encouraging a test case. > BHPA - Fully on board, very happy to get involved and push forwards.
  8. Well... I just had a VERY interesting conversation with a very helpful guy at the CAA about the current situation. Basically, as Simon said, its not permitted (although not specifically forbidden) currently, and more surprisingly there is nothing in the works that he knew of regarding PFAW for paramotors. However, I mentioned the possibility of applying for an exemption as a test case that would allow me to conduct aerial work, to which he sounded rather up-beat with the possibility and suggested that I work with the BHPA to put together a case. Watch this space.
  9. Morning Simon, thanks for your reply. Is it simply the case that the ANO currently has no way to deal with aerial work with a PPG? is something in the works? Or is it actually expressly forbidden? I've emailed the CAA several times and got nowhere, I honestly don't think even they know! On a lighter note, I'm really looking forwards to getting up in the air, i've flown small planes but never anything like this (I dont have a PPL though... yet...!) Something I'm still trying to figure out is legal take-off and landing points, as the 500ft rule doesnt apply during take-off and landing, but what is seen as "reasonable" ? EG a public park on the outskirts of a town? I'm sure all of this will be covered in the course, but you know how it is when you start something new, you start over-thinking stuff!!
  10. Hi all I am a licensed UAV pilot with uk CAA PFAW (Permission for aerial work) so have a good understanding of the ANO. I am about to start a course in the next few weeks to get myself in to the air in a paramotor as a hobby flier (I've wanted to do it for years!!) However I can find very little solid info anywhere about the CAA's current stance on paid photography/videography from a paramotor/paraglider.
  11. Hi all! I have been thinking about getting a paramotor for a good while and decided now is the time - JUST DO IT! I've bought a used motor and wing, both in excellent serviceable condition (but will get them professionally checked out before using) I'm based near Derby, but annoyingly WELL inside East Midlands CTR so no flights from here unless i can arrange something special with ATC... I am a licensed UAV pilot with CAA PFAW so have a good understanding of the rules of the air. I am hoping to take a course locally this autumn, before it gets too cold to enjoy it. I will have a lot of questions so bare with me!
