  1. Oh Flat cap, I forgot to add that I bought one from a local guy who had given up flying but I wouldn’t pay anymore than £100-£150 that was about the going rate for an old wing. Someone on here might have an old GHW kicking around to get you started and fully addicted, you’re going to love it ??
  2. Hi Flat Cap, I borrowed a ground handling wing and harness (Action 29 wing) and then spoke to my instructor Mike Chilvers (top bloke) He then taught me the correct way of doing things and avoided me making bad habits. I couldn’t then afford to just go and buy all the kit and training, so I practised and practiced whilst saving for my gear and I really enjoyed ground handling. To me it was like a sport in itself. It wasn’t till Two years later I managed to get my first flight. Discovered that it was all then worth it. It did however teach me patience and how to put the wing where I want it, not just where it wants to drift lol. I still love getting out and practicing with my old wing now. IMO there is nothing wrong with ground handling whilst waiting on the rest to happen. As long as it’s done in a safe manner with an instructor to show you the ropes. Just means that when the time is ready you will find it easy to progress. If I hear of a ground handling wing for sale I’ll let you know. Good luck and never give up, no matter how many times you lay out for another practice forward launch pouring with sweat..! ??
  3. Hi All, I thought I would post the new C.A.A "Skyway code" on the forum. (sorry if someone else has done that already) It is well worth looking at, as it covers lots of information regarding GA/Sport flying.especially section 5 and the rules of the air. Finally the C.A.A have put all the most searched for stuff in one place. you can download it directly from the C.A.A website by searching for "the skyway code" or I have attached it to this post. Skyway_Code_AW_SCREEN.pdf Cheers,
  4. Hi, As you already hold a FRTOL (flight operators licence) you would be, from my understanding, quite legal to use an approved handheld radio (airband only, NOT an Amateur 2m VHF which is very much illegal but still used by many.!) providing the airband handheld is on the approval list, and you hold an "Transportable Licence" as you do not hold an aircraft registration, which incidentally allows you to use it in any aircraft. See form "DAP1902 issue 09" downloadable from the CAA website. (Now added to this post) DAP1902Issue09enabled.pdfDAP1902Issue09enabled.pdf costing 15 pounds for 3 years should as I understand make you all legal. The trouble is, having spoken to friends that are ATC operators, in most cases paramotors often become removed from the display due to the speed of flight and the radar often filters them out as flocks of birds, meaning its then difficult to keep track of your position without updates from you, this also means they can not tell other aircraft you are there.! All of them I have spoken to agree that they would rather know you are there for that reason and say a standard position report based on the QNH and intentions of the flight would be welcomed. A basic service might be difficult due to radar filters but pilots listening on the same frequency would know where you are, your altitude and what you plan to do, so would at least know where to avoid or look out for you. Part of my work is an AGCS operator at a busy airfield with Helicopters, Microlights, Parachutes, Paramotors and Models all operating from the same field. Believe me having a call on the radio from a paramotor pilot saying where he/she is and what they plan on doing would always be welcome, as talking to just one airport by phone beforehand is great but will mean the information will not filter down to other pilots/airfields operating nearby with pilots possibly talking to other ground units. They could remain totally unaware of your position relying only on the MK1 eyeball. Also being able to dynamically change your frequency as you fly means you get a chance to build a better situation awareness of other traffic around you and them of you, even if you only listen on a frequency. In relation to callsign, it is a grey area as some calls would make it sound like you hold a AOC but it was suggested to me that it is something like your Initials followed by wing size, as then the chances of two or more pilots having the same call on the same frequency would be more remote. or something like paramotor followed by the last two digits of your year of birth. Hope that helps in some way, from the point of view of an AGCS operator Cheers,
  5. Same with my FB solo 210 with a bing 86 on a warm humid evening
  6. Thanks Dariuszk24, I take those points on board, so thank you for the reply. But I am now sure I have found the fault..! I removed the float bowl and then tried blowing into the breather tubes on the carb. Found it was blocked as Neilzy had me thinking about things. After clearing the blockage, it tested fine on the ground, so I tried it in the air. Full power was fine and maintained good climb to 1500' where I gave it a breather and responded fine. I'm guessing that the fuel couldn't fill the float chamber quickly enough because of a positive pressure building inside. Having it at idle for a while allowed it to equalise before I demanded more. Well I'm guessing that is what happened. Thanks again guys. Hope those of you that got up this evening had a great flight as I did
  7. I checked the fuel cap and it's all fine Neilzy, it was a great idea. The hole is clear. Someone suggested that the plug could be the problem breaking down at high rpm. It's not been in very long (less than a couple of hours) from new. Little strange as it picks up again fine if I leave it at idle for a while before going back to full power. Should mention maybe I'm using AVGAS as suggested by fresh breeze rather than Mogas.
  8. Hi and thanks for the reply Neilzy, I'll check it today. I removed the white one completely so I would not forget to change them over to the red one. Good thinking. I'll let you know
  9. Hi, I wonder if anyone can offer some advice please. I noticed when flying the other evening that when under full power in the climb, after about a minute the motor starts to drop in power. I then released the throttle slowly and tried to pick it up again. Only would reach where it had dropped off to before. Noticed if I then gave it about 10-15 seconds of idle and try again, I then have the full power again. Carb is a Bing 84. I did change the bearings in the prop hub end of last season. I'm just not sure if it was carb ice or the bearings starting to seize in the prop hub. Not sure, so I thought I would ask you guys
  10. I use AVGAS 100LL with my Fresh Breeze solo 210. It is what is recommended in the manual, and to be honest I think the cost difference is minimal per hour, only a few pence!. also it doesn't have any nasty hydroscopic additives like mogas to destroy rubber or suck moisture from the air, so it lasts ages and normally starts first pull. I have had all sorts of problems with mogas in the past and with it going off after only a few weeks. Only downside is the plug can clog from lead build up if at low rpm for prolonged periods. I don't know if it would suite all engines being leaded and 100 octane but personally it works great with mine.
  11. PLEASE NOTE THIS IS NOT A GUIDE. ONLY WHAT I HAVE TRIED. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND PLAYING WITH YOUR HARNESS! Thought I would add an update on how I have managed to create new kick in strap attachment points, to save my seat suspension webbing. My mother-in law is a seamstress and is very handy with a sewing machine, so she did all the work, I just paid for the items.! First of all I bought a 5m length of 20mm webbing from ebay along with some welded metal ring eyelets. I removed my seat board and wrapped the new 20mm webbing around the board, thus allowing the full strength to pull the seat board forward, rather than just a tug at the front stitches or webbing (as before). She managed to measure the length needed and made sure that it wouldn't interfere with any other of the important webbing inside the harness! The next job was to unpick a few of the stitches along the front of the seat, which was much easier than we first thought. After stitching the webbing on the ring, using the same method as the main harness webbing uses, (over, under and back in the middle), she then passed the rings and webbing through the holes made in the front. We positioned them in such a way as to avoid interfering with the speed bar pulleys, which as yet I don't use. Stitched along the front of the seat again where the little holes were made. and voila job done. now just waiting for the buckles to arrive before trying a hang test to make sure it all works ok
  12. Hi all, wonder if any of you can help please. I have a fresh breeze Airboss 122 with a wingman harness. The problem I am having is the place I have my kick in strap attached is now starting to fray the strap that supports the front of the seat board. See attached photos. Does anyone have any suggestions of how I can attach the strap so it won't get any worse? Thanks, Rob
  13. Hi John, I too came over to the dark side from a broad GA background. With all my friends thinking I was totally mad to want to fly, as they put it "a flymo with a pair of knickers over my head". In honesty it was the best thing that I ever did. I must add that everyone I have ever met in person, or spoken to from the paramotor world have been truly fantastic and enthusiastic about helping and giving advice (including this forum \club). I learned the ground handling with an old, really well used wing, with some days good and some bad. Please don't give up, as there were many times whilst dragging my old wing back to have another go, I felt that way. I was totally surprised once I received my new wing, at how it just sat there in the breeze waiting to lift up. The sometimes many frustrating hours dragging the old one about had really paid off, it was worth all that effort and waiting. I remember on my first flight talking to my instructor (Chilly) on the radio, saying how nothing comes close to that feeling of freedom and connection with the air you get with a paramotor. Now my friends all wish they could do the same sorry, I have waffled on now as usual. Good luck and stay positive John, the rewards are massive.
  14. Just wondering if anyone has looked at the new Air Navigation Order that came into force on the 25th Aug. If so is there any changes to FLHG exemption? I've looked but can't find anything relating to paramotors, or am I just being blind? only that the 10litre fuel restricton has been removed and changed to 70KG inclusive of fuel. Am I just going mad or does it only give a definition and not a requirement or exemption of class? uksi_20160765_en.pdf
  15. I was wondering what the length of the bolt is. Yes please if you have a spare one, I would really appreciate that. Even if only you could measure it for me would be handy please.
  16. Thanks Simon and thank you Alan for the answer. Both bearings were really tight in the housing. That's why I thought I would ask the question incase I pulled something that would damage the housing. Managed to get them both out and ordered some new ones the sheared bolt stud came out ok from the tentioner. I'm just grateful that it failed on the ground whilst warming the motor.
  17. Hi everyone, I had my prop belt tensioning bolt shear tonight on my Fresh Breeze solo 210 (luckily while warming up) so I removed the reduction drive assembly, to remove the broken stud and the main bearing feels worn. Does anyone know how to remove the old bearing? Can I just use a puller or is there something else I should do first? Cheers
  18. Name: Rob Area: Beccles Motor: Fresh Breeze Wing: Dudek Synthesis Anyone local, please feel free to contact me.
  19. Hi again everyone, I still haven't given up..! I took your advise and joind the Ufly4fun group over at Shipdham Airfield for some lessons. I am totally impressed with Chillys attitude and comittmant to his students and the sport. I purchased a broken Fresh Breeze Airboss 122 with a solo 210 engine around Nov 12 from a friend, which had some crash damage but all I could afford at the time (prop, tank, cage, string in cage, exhaust) a bit of a mess but I like fixing things and making them good. The total cost of the repairs came to around £250 including the Prop from DT propellers. I had lots of help both at work and friends, some of which I made because of the project and to whom I am extremely thankful. A couple of weeks ago we gave it the first run after restoring it all. It ran totally sweet and started on the very first pull with the plug cap on. We flooded the engine first to make sure oil had worked itself around the crank pin and then allowed it to evaporate to just leave an oiled film to help protect the bearing shells! I also bought a New Dudek Synthesis 31 LT, which also arrived a couple of weeks ago. I figured if the motor stops im a glider, but if the wing stops working, I'm a Brick.! I had an operation last year which has stopped me having any more lessons, but has allowed me the time I needed to work on the motor and save for the wing. It has taken me such a long time but I am committed to get there. I did buy an old Action 29 for ground handling from one of the group members and have been out in the field every day I have been able to ground handle since Dec 12. That may sound a little sad to some, but being able to ground handle has kept me focused on saving and not just giving up, plus I really enjoy it. I hope in the next few weeks to be back at Shipdham and hopefully flying.. Wow.. now just need to buy a helmet with a mic and I'm all good I hope. Fingers crossed Oh and Paul and Bob it would be great to get in touch, my email had stopped working. I am now trying to get it updated to my new one so if you are still active on here please send me an IM and I'll try and get back o you both.
  20. Thanks again. I have borrowed a wing and harness and now just waiting for the weather to get better so my mate can give me some advise on handling. The couple of times I have had the wing out I have totally loved it. now just a waiting game but at least I have made a start phew. Thanks so much for your advise guys.
  21. Thanks for the great advise guys. This forum is brilliant!! I have managed to learn lots just by reading lots of posts throughout it. I'm hoping once I get setup to see if others would like to share the site with me. Fly in BBQ must be on the cards next summer! Only problem I can see so far is the Hangars to the south can cause a bit of rotor with a southerly breeze. Not sure about a ground handling king lol, but it looks great fun watching my friend Dave do it. That's the great thing about this, even the learning looks as much fun as the flying. I'm so looking forward to it.
  22. lol im not so worried about if the wing hit a fence more if certain parts of me get caught on one. I'm quite lucky at work as it has a parachute drop zone which is very well looked after. What I really wondered is if I buy a wing off say eBay or afors at a price I could afford. if I could have that wing tested and use it to fly with later on when I go for instruction. If that is an option is there any suggestion on what to look for and what should be avoided.
  23. Thanks guys for your help. Thanks also for the welcome and a great forum this is. I have heard there is an instructor in Norfolk about 45 miles from where I live so not too bad but I think after looking at the cost of a new setup, I might need to wait and keep saving but I am keen to get there one day. I see your point about an older wing, even for learning/practicing the ground handling with. I thought about learning the ground handling between now and next summer on the good days while I use that time to save for some gear (sell loads of stuff) and have a bit of fun with the wing but as you say no point if everything handles completely differently now. I guess I'm best to just wait till I can afford to buy new gear. Thanks once again for your help guys.
  24. Hi everyone, I really need some advice about gear. I have wanted to start paramotoring since 1998 and have never got around to it due to cost and not really understanding what i need. I work at an airfield in suffolk which is very much open to all forms of aviation, so now have a good site to fly from. I have been advised by a friend who flys paramotors I should get a cheap wing thats over 10 years old to practice ground handling with, and he would show me the ropes (excuse the pun) he has advised me to then go and have some lessons with a pro instructor which makes perfect sense. the problem is i have looked on ebay and there are lots of different types and ratings and some are only just over 10 years old, so im wondering is it possible to have a wing tested, and how much this would cost as I dont have much money but so want to start this sport. I weigh 85 Kg. What weight lifting should I should go for? as I dont know what weight a motor would be. I have seen a FB matrix paraglider wing advertised with no bag or harness suitable for ground handling for £150 is this a good price? Please someone help......... Thanks in advance Rob
