Why have an 'Operations Manual' at all?

Well, for a number of reasons.

The Club needs a medium to communicate to its members the way it operates, administers itself and trains its pilots.

Existing pilots want to understand how the club works and what the PMC pilot's ladder of progression looks like. New members need to understand what the sport is about, read for themselves how their training will be structured and is likely to progress.

Our Insurance underwriters need an insight as to how we train and administer ourselves. The rules and ethics that we put in place and the training system we use tells them a lot about us and how safe an insurance bet its pilots are likely to be. A draft of the manual was submitted to our brokers some time ago. We did this to secure insurance cover for our members and instructors and achieved a cracking policy and rate in the process.

We all want to keep this sport running as it is. The freedom of action that we enjoy is unequalled elsewhere within UK aviation. As long as we remain responsible and can demonstrate that we are worthy of this self determination we are likely to be able to retain it. PCOM provides a method for doing this.

The manual is not complex but it is comprehensive and growing with every Edition. The advice within is being formed using the best sources possible. I can assure you that although I am writing it, more experienced Paramotor heads than mine are having a heavy influence in its construction.

In the replies that follow I will outline the structure of the Manual and illustrate its content for you.

Please be patient as this will take a little time.

Things are progressing with the manual gents. The structure has changed a little and other parts have been adjusted to make for a cleaner document.

Below is how it looks. The whole is wire bound with Operations and the TPG being bound together to form an A5 handy 'on site' book to reference during training.

Image

The Trainee Pilots Guide (TPG) has bound with it the PPG 1/2 syllabus, Section 1 (Operations) of PCOM and other useful handy info for the flying field. As the trainee pilots notes are generated they will be integrated into the TPG.

I have removed old posts from this thread to keep it clear, all your coments were noted thanks, I hope you don't mind.

The Flying Instructors Guide (FIG) contains course reference material. As the instructor notes are generated they will be integrated into the FIG.

Work in progress
The TPG and the FIG are substantially complete, the acompanying notes will take longer to produce because they are by their nature documents that require significant collaboration and expertise to form them. The PEs and instructors will all make their contribution across the coming year.
We have tried to keep the guides as practical as possible without losing essential detail. Please bear in mind that PCOM will evolve and grow from industry, trainee and instructor feedback. I hope to have documents available for the shop within a month. The instructors guide (FIG) is a personal issue reserved for course candidates and existing PMC AFI/QFIs.

Norman,

Thanks for posting that. I'm looking forward to making reference to three of those pubs later in the year!

Cool TJ, I don't suppose you're that hot on admin either are you? LOL

Seriously, they should start to filter into the system before too long. Someone just oiled the works a little and piled on a little pressure. ;-)

More Trainee Pilots Guides (renamed) being printed, Section 1 being amended to reflect the change of base to Membury.

As you recall I was in France and attained PPG1. In the manual at that time the requirements for PPG2 where pretty vague!
Has this part been re-written and can you let me know the requirements.
Hope you are keeping well and hope to see you soon

Eddie

Hi Eddie,

The requirments for PPG2 have not changed since they were framed. They are designed to give the examining instructor the freedom to challenge the candidate in areas where they may need to show development.
The aim isn't to create a massive hurdle, just ensure that the pilot has 'evened up' his skills and worked on areas that may have been less developed during initial training. Ideally the nascent PPG2 pilot will spend a little time with an instructor or mentor brushing up - there is a developmental aspect to this process, it isn't all about testing and 'trapping'.

Hope that helps.

From the Trainee Pilots Guide.

Quote:
3.1.5 Flight Training Requirements - PPG2

Flying experience requirements
PPG1 status effectively confers on the holder a set of ‘L plates’. The gap between PPG1 and 2 exists to provide an interval where experienced can be built on the training foundation. Few demands should be made on the individual by his peers, they will watch out for him, assisting and advising him where appropriate.

On achieving PPG2 a pilot will have flown a minimum of 10 solo PPG hours. He will have made his early mistakes and errors of judgment and spent sufficient time on the flying field watching others make theirs.

The upgrade process is a short oral examination based around airmanship and emergency procedures to ensure that earlier training has remained embedded.

Additionally a flying test confirms that no significant bad habits have developed. This test will be based on the PPG1 course content and will typically contain exercises where the candidate as a trainee pilot appeared to need development or assistance. It may contain a handling element and/or a cross country task. The content of the test is at the discretion of the candidate’s examiner (any QFI).

On successful completion PPG2 is awarded and supervisory recommendations are removed.
